Patristic Universalism is the belief that God�desires�all men to be saved and�achieves�this desire through His Son Jesus Christ. While some forms of universalism have sprung up that teach there is no hell and that all truth is relative, this is not the universalism I'm defending. The form of universalism advocated in this book is that which was taught by some of the earliest and greatest church Fathers such as Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Gregory of Nyssa. It adheres to all the traditional teachings with only a few areas of deviationtion such as the doctrine of post mortem evangelism and the doctrine of hell.

Think Universalism is heretical? Think again

In this accessible, thorough, passionately argued book, David Burnfield offers readers an alternative to the "two bad choices" of Arminianism and Calvinism. His solution is what he calls "Patristic Universalism," the belief that all people will ultimately be reconciled to God. David refers to his brand of Universalism as "Patristic," because it is rooted in the thinking of patristic church fathers, such as Clement of Alexandria, Origen and others who held out hope for the salvation of all. But it is also a deeply biblical view, which David takes pains to establish throughout. Not only that, his view also makes logical sense when argued from first principles. So those who have dismissed Universalism as un-biblical or even un-Christian should sit up and take notice. The same goes for those who have rejected Christianity due to their abhorrence at the thought of eternal hell or a God who would allow the actions of "frail, feeble, sin-stained humans" to trump his will. Like so many other books on Universalism that have emerged over the last few years, "Patristic Universalism" proves that you can be thorough biblical, thoroughly Christian and yet still hold out hope that all people will ultimately be reconciled to God. And that's good news. The best possible news! I highly recommend you read this book.

Crystal clear

This is an extraordinary book. The plan of the book is impeccable. At the forefront, the author explains clearly that exegesis always involves eisegesis. In other words, how one interprets the text depends on one's presuppositions. He then demonstrates, painfully obviously, that universalism makes more sense than exclusivism. Next, he goes through exhaustively the relevant scriptural passages to support the concepts of: "All" means "All", postmortem mercy, and Hell as a remediative process. Finally he answers all sorts of objections to a universalist hope. Quotes from some Early Church Fathers (viz. Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Gregory of Nyssa) are used to support these views. Interspersed with passionate and inspirational arguments, the book never fails to uplift one's torpor. Totally recommended. A good companion to The Inescapable Love of God. Five stars.

Patristic Universalism Is a Solid Contender

This author presents historical and biblical evidence for universalism. His case is for the restoration of all things that includes forgiveness of all, judgment of all, and ultimate repentance of all, so that every knee shall willingly bow before a Lord and Savior of all mankind--a Shepherd who faithfully recovers every lost sheep and lamb. This book is clear and presents a solid case for universalism in simple language with scriptural support and many supporting resources. It identifies universalism as the original predominate view of the early church and presents it as a valid contender alongside what was at first minority views of damnation and annihilation of unbelievers, only later becoming characteristic of Western Christendom. As presented by this author, Patristic Universalism is an orthodox, viable, and realistic option for believers that has the potential to change the heart and face of Christianity to one that identifies with love issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith.

Doing Rewards the Right Way

Steve Kerr, former chief learning officer for General Electric and Goldman Sachs, has written a short book on Reward Systems: Does Yours Measure Up? The book is in the Harvard Business Press Memo to the CEO series. However, any employee at any level can learn valuable lessons from the enjoyable book.

I find a lot of short, popular books like this -- it clocks in at less than 136 pages -- are relatively short on content. Many can be summarized in a couple of pages or paragraphs. But not this book by Steve Kerr. Kerr has had a long career in acadame and industry; he is also an excellent story teller. As a result, the book provides a wealth of information on what goes wrong, and what can go right, with reward and compensation systems.

The book contains a number of checklists and guiding principles. The major organizational principles are:

1. Define performance in actionable terms
2. Measure the right things
3. Reward the right things

This may sound simple. Of course, the devil is in the details. The book provides a great deal of information on how you can attempt to follow the three principles.

Do reward systems work? It depends on who you ask...

After over forty years of experience in large and small organizations, I have been on both sides of rewards, both receiving them and being passed over for them. If there is anything this experience has taught me, it is that in general, corporate rewards offer little on the positive side and a lot on the negative side.

There are several issues missing - or at least not fully realized, in this book, though it does contain some very true insight into failed rewards systems, such as those that start out claiming to reward outstanding performance but degenerate into mere attendance contests (a sure sign that management is either too busy, lazy or out of touch with its employees on a personal level).

One of the missing issues is favoritism. People are human, whether they are CEOs or the custodial staff and they respond more positively to those who make them feel good about themselves. They also cannot help but become somewhat biased toward those they know over those they don't know. That is why the first people in a large organization to receive awards are those in their immediate field of vision -- a phenomenon I have witnessed time and time again. Kerr does allude to the fact that, even in a quantifiable reward system, it must be taken into consideration that the playing field is not always level for the candidates -- but what also factors in is that the "favorites", or to put it more charitably, the "high-profile" persons, are often going to get the better chances?

That is not to say that this book does not have value. Kerr does acknowledge flawed systems and, most importantly, points out that there are employees being rewarded for the wrong behavior. There will always be people who figure out how to work the system. That is absolutely true. Some terribly horrendous people who make life miserable for those around them and are a drain on both morale and company resources are given awards, making those awards mockeries of their actual intent.

Another very important point Kerr makes is that saying "No" is punished and saying "yes" without question is rewarded, even if the directive is going to be damaging to the company, the client, or the future. I can't help but wonder how many "less than excellent" employees could see the current problems coming for the fall of the banks or the auto companies but were considered "negative" and "not excellent" while those who carried out the flawed orders of those above them were called "outstanding?"

So Kerr's book is valuable if only that it re-opens the subject and hopefully institutes improvement, if not perfection. You can't expect awards to always be fair, just look at the Oscars or the Emmys. But they're probably here to stay because they're a cheaper alternative to raises and bonuses in these lean times.

That said, the most important part of the issue of whether rewards work is this -- what happens to the people who DON'T get them? They may never speak about it, not wanting to be "poor sports," but for all his quantifying, Kerr can't possibly account for all the hurt and possible bitterness that giving public awards to a select few incurs on the mass of losers. Who is really getting "rewarded" ultimately? The employees or the management who can rest a little easier now that they have rewarded "the best people?"

How can you tell a crowd of employees that they're all valued and they're great, but a few are even greater? Shades of Animal Farm -- some are more equal than others. Such events not only cause deep wounds but also shove wedges between co-workers who are being told there's no "I" in "team." You can't give awards to everybody either, because obviously they lose their meaning. You might want to tailor specific awards for each individual contribution, which is time consuming, or -- heavens to betsy -- visit your people more often to let them know how valued they are. I have seen, too often, that citing the contributions of some while ignoring those of so many others causes hurts, the depths of which you may never be aware.

It's not an easy issue to solve and Kerr, to his credit, doesn't pretend to have all the answers, nor do the companies he served become magically transformed. But again, in these economically challenging times, it might do well to find more ways to do more than just create a blanket reward policy without taking the variables of the human factor into account.

Good Overview but Not a List of Reward Ideas

Reward Systems by Steve Kerr is a very short book - and it is also a high level book. I have several books on practical reward systems, but that is not what this book provides. Instead, it is more meant for a CEO to think about overall company-wide systems that will help create a productive environment. In that sense I think the title is not quite helpful. Most people who are getting a book on reward systems want to actually create reward systems and get help with them. This book is more about how to decide who gets what raises, and how to get management to implement that well.

To begin with, the book talks about a scientist working with rats. He literally yells at the rats for "not doing what he wanted." Finally he realized his EXPERIMENT was flawed - that he was not rewarding the rats well, so they naturally were not doing the desired behavior. Once he gave them good rewards, they went for them. So for example imagine a maze with pieces of chalk at the end (assuming rats hate chalk ;) ). The rats would not make any attempt to go for it. If instead you had a really lovely cheese at the end, the rat would now try to get it. The book is saying that humans are the same way. If you have "rewards" that nobody wants, you cannot be surprised when the employees do not even try to get them. You need rewards they really do want in order to movtivate them.

The book launches into a long discussion about mission statements and then metrics of how to measure which employees should get a reward. It points out that measurements should be about improving performance. It talks about rating vs ranking - i.e. giving each employee an independent quality level, or putting them all into a long line from top to bottom. Steve points out that ranking systems only really works if every single job has the same skill set and warns that ranking discourages teamwork. He says it is much better to have standards that everyone meets or doesn't meet, vs trying to compare humans with each other to rank them.

As an example, the book cites how people sometimes talk about porpoises being wonderfully helpful and pushing sailors to safety. However, studies show that porpoises like to push all objects in all directions. The sailors that are pushed to land are able to tell their story - but the sailors pushed out to sea drown and don't tell their stories. Therefore we only hear half of the story.

All people in a system need to get treated equally. In many systems the high performers get rewards but no feedback - while the low performers get no rewards and lots of feedback. All people should get feedback so they can get better. Rewards should be quickly, so that it reinforces the behavior, rather than months or years later. You want to change rewards frequently so that they stay "special" and not "expected". Also, you should only rarely punish. People respond far better striving towards a reward than fearing a damaging activity.

The book does reasonably well as a high-end overview of what a reward system should aim for - but it is definitely NOT an actual, practical "how to think up rewards your employees will like" type of book. If you don't have a mission statement or a pay raise system in place yet - or if you are dissatisfied with either - this is a book to take a look at. If you want actual reward system designs and ideas, you will need to look elsewhere.

About the Author
Barbara S. Pinto has worked as a teacher of early childhood education and held other educational functions for the past thirty years. She has taught pre-school, Kindergarten, first and second grade, with the bulk of the experience in Grade One. For the past eight years, she has been a Literacy Coach, mentor and educational consultant. She has co-written curricula materials for the NYC Department of Education, and worked at Random House School Division. Meeting Common Core Standards Can Be Fun?!

I know that when the common core standards were unveiled, I worried that many primary teachers would see the responsiveness to child development and fun get sucked out of their classrooms. However, after reading this book, I was delighted to see all the ways that we can teach rigorously while meeting the standards, but still meet the needs of our littlest learners to be active and joyful. The adventures in this book are ones you'll look forward to trying: planting a salad, going on a word hunt, using maps, making lemonade . Also, this book is so practical - filled with realistic and easy-to-do ideas, even including ways to modify certain activities and involve parents. A great book for any primary teacher who is looking for ways to authentically include non-fiction reading in ways that kids will love and will help them to become stronger readers.

The author is an experienced Reading teacher and her expertise is displayed in this useful handbook for new teachers and experienced ones. It is made up of activities perfect for the K-1 classroom as well as helpful hints for teaching a myriad of units. Matthias Young runs the Atlanta Guitar Clinic, and is the Head of Guitar at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta, GA. Perfect for beginners and teachers alike! "MGM" ROCKS!

Okay, I've played the guitar off an on for the last 12 years or so, and have been the proud (and sometimes not-so-proud) owner of 20+ "How To" guitar manuals. To put it plainly, I wish "Metal Guitar Method" had been around when I started my guitar journey at age 13. It is a clear, concise, DETAILED manual of how to develop the technique necessary for playing metal guitar, starting with posture and hand positions and finishing with advanced, difficult songs that incorporate all of the skills taught in the individual lessons. This manual is ideal for beginners (or people who are a little bit out of practice like me!), but can be equally helpful for advanced players and teachers as well. The DVD and songs available on the website are SUPER HELPFUL!!! (I really like that I can access the songs from my smart phone and can basically practice them anywhere.) I took guitar lessons for 5 years, and I still feel inspired and challenged by this material. Definitely worth the price! I couldn't recommend this book enough, and will be on the lookout for more books by Matthias.

Okay, you're a metal head, you want to learn to shred like the big dogs, Metal Guitar Method is where you start.

If you're a metal head like me and a beginner and you're really not interested in practicing songs like "Mary Had A Little Lamb" or "Polly Wolly Doodle", Metal Guitar Method is THE must have course. I am really enjoying working my way through this course. In my past attempts at learning guitar from books and videos I just never felt I was making much progress but with MGM I am amazing myself with the progress I am making and it really motivates me to practice. Considering all the overpriced, overhyped crapola in the guitar instruction market, this course is a real stand out and also a real bargain. So many courses take the approach of teaching you something and then move on to something else and seem to have no logical sequence of instruction and it all just never seems to tie together. This is certainly not the case with MGM. Matthias Young is a real teacher, not just some guy who can play guitar. His method builds skill upon skill in a very well paced and logical learning order and you practice those skills by learning songs composed by the author, not just practicing endless exercises. Thank you Matthias for this true gem of a course, I really wish I would have had MGM years ago.

For Those About To Rock...

This has been a great book for me! I started taking guitar lessons (and I had never played guitar before), and since I prefer rock and metal, my teacher recommended that I get this book. In just a few weeks, I've gotten through over half of the book, and it's really fun to play with the backing tracks on each exercise. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is just starting out and wants to play rock and metal! No more banging your head (yet!) against a wall learning "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or "Silent Night" here, folks! The beginning exercises start out sounding really good, and the book never lets up. The DVD footage could not be better, and the split screen shots are really good at showing technique for both hands. Hopefully we'll see more material from this author!

About the Author
Eric Temple Bell was born in 1883 in Aberdeen, Scotland. His early education was obtained in England. Coming to the United States in 1902, he entered Stanford University and took his A.B. degree in 1904. In 1908 he was teaching fellow at the University of Washington, where he took his A.M. degree in 1909. In 1911 he entered Columbia University, where he took his Ph.D. degree in 1912. He returned to the University of Washington as instructor in mathematics and became full professor in 1921. During the summers of 1924-28 he taught at the University of Chicago, and in 1926 (first half) at Harvard University, when he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology.

Dr. Bell was a former President of the Mathematical Association of America, a former Vice President of the American Mathematical Society and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was on the editorial staffs of the "Transactions of the American Mathematical Society," the "American Journal of Mathematics," and the "Journal of the Philosophy of Science." He belonged to The American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, the Circolo Matematico di Palermo, the Calcutta Mathematical Society, Sigma Xi, and Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. He won the Bocher Prize of the American Mathematical Society for his research work. His twelve published books include "The Purple Sapphire" (1924), "Algebraic Arithmetic" (1927), "Debunking Science," and "Queen of the Sciences" (1931), "Numerology" (1933), and "The Search for Truth" (1934).

Dr. Bell died in December 1960, just before the publication ofhis latest book, "The Last Problem."

philosophy is harder than mathematics

E.T. Bell was on a roll when wrote his histories of mathematics. Men of Mathematics, Development of Mathematics, and Magic of Numbers all came around the same time. He must have used the same notes! Men of Mathematics and the Development of Mathematics are contrasts, but mathematicians will even say his Development of Mathematics is not technical enough. But Men of Mathematics has a little more relation to 'Magic of Numbers.'

Both 'Men of Mathematics', and 'Magic of Numbers' relate past mathematicians and mathematics to modern ideas. 'Men of Mathematics' is more about as many mathematicians as E.T. Bell wished to stuff in one volume(he missed plenty; David Hilbert, Sophus Lie, Frobenius, Carmille Jordan to name a few), but he mentions who Dedekins is a modern Eudoxus, and Kronecker is a kind of Zeno(i'm thinking more like Brouner). 'Magic of Numbers' relates ancient philosophies of mathematics with modern, but he does more.

E.T. Bell uses Plato and Aristotle writings almost like Pauline epistles into the birth of Christianity. He's trying to see what he can see in terms of the birth of mathematics, and the philosophy of mathematics, through the writings of Plato and Aristotle. He gives biographies of Thales, Anaxagoras, Pythagoras, and makes educated guesses on various issues with their lives. E.T. Bell gives some details on these guys you might not find elsewhere, but in some cases like Anaxagoras and Empedicles, he misses a few things; he even says he chooses to not get into some details; I think he should have. For instance, the fact that Anaxagoras had some logical reasons for thinking of evolution of life, and Empediclies discovered the idea of air. See Carl Sagan's account in chapter/episode 7 of his Cosmos(or, you could read "Sleepwalkers" by Arthur Koestler, which is where Carl Sagan gets his ideas from).

He mentions the idea that Christianity is midrashing the old testament; this idea is considered a new exciting idea in todays New Testament comparative religion researchers - see The Jesus Puzzle by Earl Doherty for a quick introduction.

I'd like to mention that James Frazer in his "Golden Bough" finds much interesting relation between magic and religion. In it, he indirectly uncovers the idea of sungods though his gods of the seasons. He uncovers much in terms of the idea of the evolution of mankind's idea of figuring out how the universe works. At one time, magic and religion were the scientific ideas. People have argued that this is demeaning to religions and cultures based on them. In science, disproving an idea is o.k. but we're not allowed to do so in the field of religion. But, the religious are allowed to disprove one another and argue against science. Kind of interesting. I mention this because this book also tries to understand the evolution of mathematical thought form pre-mathematical thought, through the mathematical perspective. Basically, both mythology and mathematics are analogies; but, one is constructive, and the other is not. I find in my explorations of this relation suggested by Jacob Bronowski for instance in his "Science and Human Values", that mathematics is a clean break despite this common trait(analogy). The Golden bough doesn't note this connection; E.T. Bell's "Magic of Numbers" does. They are complementary to those who want to understand rationally the evolution of mankinds explorations from ignorance to being able to figure out the universe. And, as E.T. Bell shows in his "Magic of Numbers", the mythicists don't believe in observation/experimental, or even logical proof confirmation of their ideas. They're effort is to hide their ideas far away from being able to figure anything out. There's clearly a very large social problem here.

About mathematics and philosophical thinking

This book is a fascinating journey into the history of science and the world of mathematics and numbers and their connection with philosophical thinking. The fundamental argument is whether the nature of existence can be explained by deductive reasoning, as Pythagoras and Plato believed, or via experimentation, and also whether mathematics is an invention or a discovery.

The review begins with Pythagoras and Plato who recognized mathematics as an expression of the divine principles of creation and order. Subsequently this view became corrupted through the dogmatization of Christianity. Then a major shift occurred through Newton's work to understand nature via experimentation, and mathematics was relegated to backing it up. This change is seen as the cause of the industrial revolution. The next major turn about happened as a consequence of quantum physics which necessitated mathematics to dominate again not only because mathematics can explain complex issues in a comparatively simple and concise manner but also because experimental verification has become extremely difficult if not impossible. However, although mathematics has assumed the key role again, the author points out that it is now devoid of spiritual meaning.

The intriguing aspect is though that many aspects of the sub-atomic world were predicted by spiritual sources, and multidimensionality and multiple universes were in the spiritual vocabulary long before science stumbled upon their existence. Unfortunately, the author gives no credence to this. On the contrary he is often sarcastic and at best displays an amused tolerance as exemplified in his belief that 'everything is number' is possibly the most mischievous misreading of nature in the history of human errors. He also believes that Pythagoras' and Plato's ideas were directly responsible for retarding the start of modern science.

Nevertheless, the author presented a brilliant analysis of core problems of existence, and although it is one sided in some ways, we can easily fill in the gaps ourselves and allow spiritual and scientific thinking to support each other (this may horrify the author though).

Does a good job of showing the reader how to start from scratch and build their security policy infrastructure

Security policies are like fiber, that is, the kind you eat. Everyone agrees that fiber is good for you, but no one really wants to eat it. So too with information security policies. They are sorely needed, but most users don't go out of their way to comply with them. And in many firms, they are not even trained in what they have to do. But failure to have adequate information security policies can lead to myriad risks for an organization.

For the sake of a basic definition, a policy is a formal, brief, and high-level statement or plan that embraces an organization's general beliefs, goals, objectives, and acceptable procedures for a specified subject area. The purpose of information security is to protect an organization's resources. The cornerstone of any information security strategy is a robust set of policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.

There are many reasons what information security policies are needed. Some of the most imperative reasons are:
* To inform users of their information protection duties
* Advise them what they can and cannot do with respect to sensitive information.
* Define how users are permitted to represent the organization, what they may disclose publicly, and how they may use organizational computer resources for personal purposes.
* To clearly define protective measures for these special information assets. The existence of a policy may be a decisive factor in a court of law, showing that the organization took steps to protect its intellectual property.
* Define both acceptable and unacceptable behavior. For example, spending a lot of time surfing the web and downloading videos off the net are both generally unacceptable.
* Policies are needed to establish the basis for disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Building an Effective Information Security Policy Architecture does a good job of showing the reader how to start from scratch and build their security policy infrastructure. The book starts off at a high-level about the need for policies, and then goes into details on how to develop, write and sell these policies to management.

The book is a good guide to the entire policy lifecycle, and how to use various means to get to the ultimate goal. At 340 pages, the first ten chapters comprise 155 pages and deal with creating the policy infrastructure, communicating with management, and putting the entire policy puzzle together. The final 185 pages comprise 21 appendices of various examples of different policies.

A most significant downside and frustrating part to the book is that there is no CD-ROM with it, or companion website in which to download and use the numerous policy and process examples. At $80.00, such an option should be de rigueur. The lack of electronic versions of the policies in a book such as this is senseless.

Also, this is the first technology book that I have ever seen that did not cite a single reference. It is hard to imagine writing a book on this topic without using some sort of external reference. While the author may not want to quote sources, she should at least point the reader to other sources of information about security policies. Two notable and essential sources in the information security policy space are the SANS Institute - SANS Security Policy Project, which is free, and Information Security Policies Made Easy from Information Shield, Inc., which is $795.00, but worth every penny for a serious security policy effort. Full disclosure: I am on the Information Shield Expert Panel, but get no financial incentives or compensation.

Overall, Building an Effective Information Security Policy Architecture is a good resource to use if you are tasked to create or modify your organizations set of information security policies. The book will likely find itself on the desk of many information security professionals.

While it is frustrating that the book makes you reinvent the wheel by not having electronic versions of the polices, its value still can't be underestimated. Let's hope future versions of the book will fix that anomaly.

An Exemplar of Chess Opening Books

Rizzitano's "How to Beat 1 d4" is an example of how opening repetoire books should be written. The reader can tell how meticulously the author approached this work- all the relevant analysis, along with many suggested improvements from the author himself. The book presents the Queen's Gambit Accepted as the centerpiece of the repetoire, and also offers lines against all of White's second-move alternatives. A welcome bonus is analysis of 3 e3 e5 in the QGA, which allows Black to play alternatives such as 4...Bg4 in the main line after 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 e3. A great work.

Won my first two QGA games after reading this book

I'm an ICCF Master Class player and I recently bought Rizzitano's book "How to beat 1.d4". I ever had problem with black vs 1.d4 and I read with great interest Rizzitano's book. The book was clear, extremely interesting, up to date, with all strategic ideas behind the opening well analysed and explained.

I recently tried the QGA in an ICCF Master Class tournament (EM-M-307) and the result was : +2 =0 -0 that is 100% for the first 2 QGA I ever played!!!!

Compliments to the author: the good result I get in the tournament is fully due to his book!!!

Great Book

This is an amazing book, extremely detailed and thorough. It is a totally complete repertoire against 1.d4. I don't know what the last reviewer is talking about. Contrarily, this one of the most complete and thorough opening repertoire books I've ever seen.

This is your road map when white plays 1.d4. Keep in mind that it's a repertoire book, not an instructional manual on how to play every single move in every single position. (But it comes close!) One thing the book lacks is an "Illustrative Games" section. If this is your only reference, then you will need to either find a supplemental book, well annotated QGA games, or a coach to help you work through the positions once the analysis stops.

The good news is that he basically quotes his sources on every book, game fragment, and annotator. If you want to see more, just pull the game up on your computer and have at it. This is a window into a titled player's opening preparation, so be prepared to do some work to digest the material.

I think this is good for players rated 1800+, because it can be an overwhelming amount of material at some points. It is definitely *not* the "Easy Guide" to the QGA.

I am looking forward to seeing more from the meticulously thorough Rizzitano.
