About the Author
John Hight is the Director of Production, External Development for Sony Computer Entertainment of America. In 1991, John built his first game, Battleship, for the Philips CDi player. Since that time he has worked on over 30 games and nine educational products on various platforms. He's been fortunate to serve many different development roles: programmer, artist, designer, writer, producer, and studio executive. John oversees external production for Sony in Santa Monica, where his team has produced BlastFactor (one of the first downloadable games on Sony's Network Platform) and flow (the first indie game published on PlayStation 3). While Executive Producer at Atari, John brought Wizards of the Coast, BioWare, and Obsidian together to develop Neverwinter Nights 2. In his role as Executive Producer and Director of Design for Electronic Arts, John led the design and creative production of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge, and Nox. John holds a BSE in Computer Science from the University of New Mexico and an MBA from USC's Marshall School of Business.
Jeannie Novak is the lead author and series editor of the widely acclaimed GAME DEVELOPMENT ESSENTIALS series (with over 15 published titles), co-author of PLAY THE GAME: THE PARENT'S GUIDE TO VIDEO GAMES, and co-author of three pioneering books on the interactive entertainment industry--including CREATING INTERNET ENTERTAINMENT. She is also co-founder of Novy Unlimited and CEO of Kaleidospace, LLC (dbaIndiespace), providing curriculum development and consulting services for corporations, educators, and creative professionals in games, music, film, education, and technology.Novak served as director of the Game Art & Design and Media Arts & Animation programs at the Art Institute Online and has taught game courses at UCLA, Art Center College of Design, DeVry University, Westwood College, ITT Technical Institute, and the Academy of Entertainment & Technology at Santa Monica College. Great Text

I'm currently a student at the University of Baltimore, and our teacher required this book as our main text, its a very nice book. The information is laid out to make sense. Each chapter starts by telling you what the main points of the chapter is, so you can jump right into the section that you specifically want. Its also not a big book, its thin but filled with great information. Its also very light to read, it has pictures, and small paragraphs, and in each section there is one page paragraph or two written by those who are in the industry, giving advise from their real world experience about the particular topic the chapter is on.
I never thought I would ever say this, but my summary homework for this book is actually fun to do. =)

Absorbing

I bought this as a text book for a class. I've enjoyed reading it. I am about half way through. I have found it informative and to the point. There isn't to much main text in each chapter. A lot of the space is taken up by asides and interviews with industry pros. I appreciate this approach because those are the people you need to be listening to. It's better than just one author droning on; you get multiple views and anecdotes. This may sound silly but the abundance of illustrations is nice too. I like to be able to see visuals along with text and this book has plenty of screen shots and diagrams to give examples and aid in understanding.
As someone who hopes to start a game studio or at least rise through the ranks at one, knowing project management is a must. I have learned a lot from the first 6 chapters and feel I am already better prepared. The price is also a plus. I see that it's gone up a bit since I bought it but $40 is still pretty cheap for a textbook. Since I had to get this book for a class I didn't really look to see if there are any alternatives but I don't think you could go wrong with this.

I have not quite ran through the whole book yet, as I am also reading it for a game design class. But this book was obviously worked on by people who know how to get a game of the ground. Very informative, fun to read, and covers pretty much everything. Not a perfect book, as another reviewer said a few topics don't go as in depth as they could, but not flawed enough for me to subtract a whole star.
