Gaston Dorren is a linguist, journalist, and polyglot. He speaks Dutch, Limburgish, English, German, French, and Spanish, and reads nine more languages. He is the author of two books in Dutch, and the creator of an app, The Language Lover's Guide to Europe. Dorren lives in the Netherlands.

Lotta fun!

I couldn't put it down and plowed through in a couple days. Not very technical, and sporadic on the topics it covered, but that was the point of the book. If you want to delve deep into the linguistic side of language, this is not for you. If you have an interest in language, it is.

A must-have, but...

An interesting, entertaining and well-documented work, regrettably flawed at times – as is often the case in this field – by minor bursts of overconfidence. On these rare occasions, Gaston Dorren allows himself to rely on the very same unfounded cliches, long-debunked misconceptions and all-to-common prejudices he has been known to criticize wittily. The chapter on Esperanto is a particularly outstanding illustration of this tendency. Nevertheless, a must-have for all language lovers.
