If you need the online supplemental stuff...

DON'T BUY THIS BOOK if you need the registration code for the online extras. Mine arrived in great, brand new condition but lacking the stuff for Evolve(Elsevier)that my instructors required us to have. Got this book for cheap but if you buy the online stuff separately at evolve.com it will set you back another $80. Better off paying the outrageous prices at your campus bookstore.

One of my favorite nursing books!

This book was one of my favorites in my first semester of nursing. It gets right to the point about how to assess and is organized by body system. The pictures are helpful, too. The CD it comes with is great too!

Good reference book

I had to get this for a class in nursing school. It has a lot of pictures and notes of normal and abnormal findings which is nice to have. I feel like this is more of a reference book than a text book though. It is really boring to read just for the sake of reading for a class. I found it helpful to look up diagnosis's and read about some of the typical assessment findings.

Please keep your agenda out of my intro textbook (even if I might otherwise agree with you)!

As a textbook designed to give an overview to adult learning theory, these authors interlace blatant personal, loaded biases with valuable, factual, and well-substantiated information.

As a socially liberal individual, I presume to share many of the ideals that shine through the book; however, I am disgusted by these authors' abuse of their publication. To write such politically-charged examples into a supposedly factual text is repugnant. I could hardly read through a page in the first few chapters without becoming distressed by the lack of even an attempt at neutrality.

Putting the shoe on the other foot, if a team of socially conservative authors laced their supposedly "introductory" text with blatant and intolerant views in support of their agenda, the academic community would cry out in horror and debunk the scholarly value of such a work...regardless of how much scholarly validity there might be.

Because this book takes a liberal (verging on extreme left) viewpoint, many readers seem to uncritically accept this violation of the covenant between textbook and audience: if you're writing an editorial, feel free to do so, just don't couch your beliefs in a text that will be used as a broad introduction to an important, relevant field. What I find especially pernicious is that the authors specifically cite outside sources that seem to validate and legitimize the appropriateness of this bias to the actual factual material (as in the case of the formal curriculum (math)/informal curriculum (homophobia) example on pp. 37-38). This is tantamount to saying that fundamental to the field of adult learning is a requisite liberal social bias (see also the example of anti-corporate groups pg. 39, oppressed factory workers pp. 171, among others).

Authors: if it is your position that one needs to be a leftist in order to study adult learning, then feel free to say it, just please don't veil your belief in what your book jacket describes as "the seminal work and most current thinking on adult learning."

Several of the reviews who have given this book one star have stated the examples of where these biases shine through, but it seems to me that those reviewers are upset because they disagree with the author's politics (my apologies if to those reviewers if I am misstating their positions). However, I should hope that anyone who is engaging in academic study at a post-graduate level has the critical acumen and commitment to legitimate inquiry to be offended by this level of editorializing, regardless of the symmetry of one's own politics with those of the authors.

So why did I give this a 3? If you are incisive enough to read past the editorializing, and if you are looking for a comprehensive guide to additional (less biased, more factual) resources, this is a great book. You can find many well-documented descriptions of theories and theorists of learning, cognition, psychology, and adult learning, and this book can ultimately prove an effective entree into a fascinating and relevant field.

And personally, I find the study of adult learning and improvement of education to be a great way to improve humanity. If this book, then, must have an agenda, then perhaps it should be to be INCLUSIVE, inspiring others to participate in this transformational field.

Another grad student

Merriam's spirituality section reads right off of a new age sale rack. "Grace lurks among the vegetables in the supermarket. Grace sits on a bar stool and smokes a cigarette". It just doesn't get any more absurd than quoting research like that.
It's stocked with disdain for traditional learning and loaded with bias and garbage like the above. Yuck. She spends more time tearing apart theories that don't jive with her agenda than going over new thought. Rotten book.

Poorly written text

This is one of the most poorly written texts covering adult learning theory. The author has picked a selection of different theories but only gives a short introduction to each - leaving many questions and concerns after reading each chapter.

The information given on educational theorists is horribly fragmented. In many chapters there is no context, history or biography of the theorists given. If you'd like fragmented information on learning theories - this is the book.

If you'd like comprehensive information on learning theories-this is not the right book. The information has to be supplemented with a lot of hard work researching details from the internet or other educational texts.

This was a required text for a graduate level course in adult education and it was a waste of money.

comprehensive great information HISTORY of sexuality in America.. NOT a sex guide book!

this is a text book so people's whiny reviews that "it reads like a text book" are ridiculous, it is a text book, you're either able to handle intellectual reading or you're not. it's not a "sex" book. It's a history of sexuality within north american history.. from colonial on through the 1970's 80's.
The book discusses the shifting values and mores and how sexuality was considered a societal issue .. for Puritans sexuality was about procreation and all within the realms of marriage .. neighbors and people spied on one another, tattled on each other and then saw punishment done for breaking laws. This was a way to keep the community tightly knit and on track.. sexuality changed as prostitution and our country changed due to wars or events.. this book talks about the history of sex it's not about positions or titillating stories..

Move over, Joseph Campbell!

Finally, a book on the hero's journey when that hero's a woman! Ms. Frankel covers so many cultures I've never even heard of- Anatolia, Samoa, Xhosa, Ugarit, plus all the obvious Greek-Scottish-China-Germany fairytales and myths. It's a lot like Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces, but addresses women's issues like finding out you married a beast, overcoming child abuse to find your place in the world, and questing for a lost lover or child. The author covers all the steps from leaving home as a girl to becoming, you guessed it, a godddess! Then she starts all over and covers all the archetypes, like trickster, warrior, spirit, but again, all female. And it's all from literally hundreds of texts of heavily researched mythology. She has lots of resources and booklists at [...]as well. If you enjoy mythology but find all the hero quests a bit sexist, this is the book for you.

Brought Tears to My Eyes

I had previously reviewed Valerie Frankel's related book, "Buffy and the Heroine's Journey." When I first received this "From Girl to Goddess," I had dug in with the same fervor - and found myself lost. It seemed more encyclopedic; more like a compendium than a book with discernible path and vision. (This despite its well-organized chapters and major sections.) I was committed to doing a review, yet it seemed hard to go beyond the "compendium" notion, citing the extensive and well-researched collection of women's folk stories and mythologies from around the world.

This morning, in the midst of thinking about how to help one of my new clients, my eye rested on this book and I picked it up.

It was so exactly what I needed!

I had been hard-pushing for some time. Every day - for over a month - had been task-focused. I had just written a blog post about male mentors of the "Obi-wan Kenobi" and "Yoda" sort, and had segued onto Sun Tzu's "The Art of War," translating the concepts for those launching an internet-based marketing campaign.

In short, despite having business that dominantly addresses the needs of women, I had been in a masculine mindset. I had been thinking in terms of being guided by masculine values.

My client (and somewhat surprisingly, my own self) needed to reconnect with core feminine wisdom.

I opened Frankel's book randomly, and read:

"As a teacher of independence, the evil stepmother is essential to the story. She's not only the antagonist; she also balances the far-too-generous fairy godmother or angelic absent mother."

This immediately answered one of my own questions: Why are there so few female correlates to the well-known male guides and gurus? Obi-wan Kenobi and Yoda ("Star Wars"), Mr. Miyagi ("The Karate Kid"), Professor Dumbledore (various Harry Potter books and movies), and even Don Diego de la Vega ("The Mask of Zorro) all play essential roles.

Why was there only the occasional, wish-granting fairy godmother as a guide for women?

Why was the "evil stepmother" so prevalent? What did it say about ourselves as women that we so consistently created this role in not only our fairy tales, but our current "romantic fiction" novels?

Frankel's identification of the stepmother as a "harsh tutor" - and the many stories which she uses to reinforce this point - is just one example of her illuminating genius.

Frankel does with suites of related stories what Joseph Campbell did in his epic "Hero with a Thousand Faces." Her task, though, has been more complex, and she's performed it with both penetrating insight and extensive research and documentation.

While Campbell addresses the young man's heroic journey, Frankel addresses the complexity of women's multiple and evolving journeys. While men do mature beyond their initial "heroic" stage (they themselves become mentors and guides), the feminine journey has minimally three stages (the well-understood Maiden, Mother, and Crone), to which Frankel adds the "New Moon: Spirit Guardian" - a stage well after becoming a wise Crone.

The challenge of women's journeying - throughout our life stages, and knowing and claiming the different aspects of who we are - is complex, difficult, and dangerous. Not all of us complete our full journeying. Few of us are able to tell the tales.

Yet by bringing together folktales and myths from throughout the world, and by insightfully grouping together those whose underlying myths communicates a singular core message, Frankel illumines core feminine processes.

In essence, Frankel takes feminine depth psychology to a profound new level.

This is a book to be cherished. Perhaps not to be read through, cover to cover, at just a few sittings. Rather, it serves as an insightful resource, a guide, when we seek answers to questions about ourselves.

Simply having it about - on the top of the table, not buried in the bookcase with so many others - is a great advantage.

This is a great "coffee table book" in the truest sense of the word. Or perhaps used as a "night table book." Or a book on the table near the desk, or in the kitchen. It's a great book to have about, so that as questions emerge, Frankel's deft interpretation of fairy tale's deep meanings can illumine our lives.

For Those Interested in Feminist and Jungian Perspectives of Woman in Myths and Folklore

This was a fascinating book. The author uses Joseph Cambell, Jungian psychology, and other sources to dissect folklore, fairytales, and myths about heroines. She reveals to the reader the hidden truths about life in each story. The beginning of each chapter is a story that relates to the theme she is discussing. Frankel gives the title of the story and the country it originated in. As she discusses the theme, she brings in similar stories from other cultures. It is amazing how the same tale is told by different peoples thoughout the world. This is where Jung's idea of archetypes comes to play. We are all human beings with universal thoughts and emotions that appear in the stories we tell.

The book is divided into the three phases of a womans life; maiden, mother and crone. The maiden stories are about the journey from adolescence to adulthood. Some of these are the standard tales we hear as a child; Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty. In these tales the girl is fearful of what she will soon become, a wife and mother. She is tormented by an evil stepmother or witch and either sleeps through adolescence and wakens to a husband or goes through a trial to prove she is worthy of marriage. Maiden stories also include tales about women coming to terms with the shadow self or the darker more sexual side of there personality. These stories usually involve trips to the underworld where sacrifices are made and something is gained. Other maiden fables envolve finding the animus or male side of the personality that will complete them. The next stories are about motherhood. The author shows that mother's can be very different. Some are loving and sad when there child leaves as in the story of Demeter and Persephone. Other mothers can be jealous of the new woman in there son's life as shown in the tale of Cupid and Psyche. Some mothers can be vengeful as in the myth of Jason and Medea. The last stories are about the end years in the woman's life. In the crone stage the woman becomes the wise-woman and eventually initiates the cycle of death and rebirth.

In this review I have just scratched the surface of the knowledge that is conveyed by the author. Once you have read this book you will look at novels and movies in a whole different way. Eventhough this a book about the heroine's journey, some of the themes relate to the hero's journey as well. The most interesting themes are that of facing your shadow self and finding your animus or anima I read this book because of my interest in myths and fables. I recommend it to feminists and those interested in psychology, as well as readers who enjoy a good story.

Go retro, rogue! Curses to ye!

Let's face it--you wouldn't be looking at this unless you're pretty unique in your use of computers--or somewhat eclectic in your hobbies. I like ncurses for many reasons. In this day and age of complex GUI applications and operating system interfaces, ncurses allows a programmer to return to a simpler time--or to a future world where dwarfs and complex agents live in an emergent world of complexity.

This is another book I feel compelled to review for two reasons: 1) there is really nothing else like it that is currently available, and 2) it's hard to imagine there being a better book on this subject. Dan Gookin has always been a great writer for those that want to teach themselves C programming (or DOS, or many other domains). I believe this book may be his most unique contribution to the field.

The book has 556 pages, but don't think it's a slow read. In fact, you'll probably find yourself flying through it, thankful that they still print tons of example code in books like this. Page 183 is the last of the regular text in the book, the end of 14 excellent chapters that have you writing code and experimenting all along the way. Gookin's style is quite likeable and fun, but he clearly knows his stuff. I was expecting the remainder of the book (pages 185-556--the majority of the book) to be a handy physical copy of man pages and documentation from the ncurses project--and that would have been fine with me. Instead, however, the rest of the book is surprisingly useful as both a reference for the future and also a well-indexed resource you can use while learning ncurses.

If you are a hobbyist considering making a retro game, or small utility programs with a command line interface, you really have all you need here--except for knowing how to program C, which should come first, of course.

Its bloated

The book describes the NCurses library in an easy to understand manner. for my taste its a bit too much hot air that serves no purpose other than to fill space, plus the font is really big, this wasting more space. More than half of the book is basically a reprint of the man pages but without a good page layout so its really hard to find anything without looking up the page number in the alphabetical index first.
The book does not cover the Forms library nor the Menu library which is why I give it only 3 stars altogether. With 500 pages, the complete NCurses library could have been covered and the man pages dont really belong in a book like this.

One fact about this sequel to Jurassic Park stands out above all: it follows a book that, with spinoffs, including the movie, proved to be the most profitable literary venture ever. So where does the author of a near billion-dollar novel sit? Squarely on the shoulders of his own past work?and Arthur Conan Doyle's. Crichton has borrowed from Conan Doyle before?Rising Sun was Holmes and Watson in Japan?but never so brazenly. The title itself here, the same as that of Conan Doyle's yarn about an equatorial plateau rife with dinos, acknowledges the debt. More enervating are Crichton's self-borrowings: the plot line of this novel reads like an outtake from JP. Instead of bringing his dinos to a city, for instance, Crichton keeps them in the Costa Rican jungle, on an offshore island that was the secret breeding ground for the beasts. Only chaos theoretician Ian Malcolm, among the earlier principals, returns to explore this Lost World, six years after the events of JP; but once again, there's a dynamic paleontologist, a pretty female scientist and two cute kids, boy and girl?the latter even saves the day through clever hacking, just as in JP. Despite stiff prose and brittle characters, Chrichton can still conjure unparalleled dino terror, although the wonder is gone and the attacks are predictable, the pacing perfunctory. But his heart now seems to be not so much in the storytelling as in pedagogy: from start to finish, the novel aims to illustrate Crichton's ideas about extinction?basically, that it occurs because of behavioral rather than environmental changes?and reads like a scientific fable, with pages of theory balancing the hectic action. When strange animal carcasses begin to wash up on the shores of Costa Rica, an eccentric paleontologist suspects that dinosaurs may exist somewhere in the area. This much-anticipated sequel to the megahit Jurassic Park (Knopf, 1990) reads more like a movie novelization: so bereft of plot and characterization in deference to action that it is closer in spirit to Steven Spielberg's movie version (1993) than to the entertaining and educational novel that preceded it. Reprising their roles from Jurassic Park are Ian Malcolm, who bought the farm courtesy of a T-rex in JP but whom Crichton seemingly couldn't resist resurrecting, and Lew Dodgson, the evil scientist who makes a living stealing ideas from his fellow researchers. Malcolm and Dodgson, leading separate parties, converge on a small Costa Rican island where the resident raptors, tyrannosaurs, and other carnivores make their field trip distinctly unpleasant. Despite its flaws, however, there will undoubtedly be huge demand in public libraries for Crichton's latest.

Gorgeous gift - better book

I bought this book for myself a couple years ago. It's a beautiful copy. I hunted for a while to find the same copy to give as a gift this Christmas. It's a beautiful leather bound book with guided pages the cover is embossed and wonderfgully done. Highly recommend

As far as the book itself is concerned if you are a big fan of the jurrasic park movies and you have not read the booksyou have no clue what you have been missing. Spare me your “oh but it’s sooooooo science-y and I got bored before the story really took off” or the “you do know there is no way this could ever really happen, right????” talk. I don’t care. Yes, it is super science-y and yes, dinosaurs still aren’t free-ranging on an island off the shores of Costa Rica, but it doesn't change the fact that this book is phenomenal. I had given Spielberg so much credit (even knowing his film was based off of this book), but the credit is all owed to Michael Crichton. Not only are the characters/dialogue/etc. ripped right out of the book, but Crichton did it so much better. Sure, certain unforgettable scenes were created purely by Spielberg but there are literally HUNDREDS of pages of action that were not included in the motion picture, additional plot twists, new dinosaurs and other surprises to prove to all that Crichton’s original was sheer genius. In fact, after reading Jurassic Park I questioned why some parts of the original were ever changed for the film at all. Of course I realize that not every page of a book can be included in a movie adaptation, but the changes in Lex, Tim, Ellie and Grant’s characters were unnecessary and the changes to Hammond are almost unforgiveable. Hammond was never meant to be portrayed as a well-intended old fool, but rather a mad scientist much like Dr. Moreau. I’ll refrain from saying more as to not spoil the reading experience for all, but trust me when I say if you liked the movie, you’re going to love the book.

An Exciting Sequel

The dinosaurs on Site B can't be contained forever in Michael Crichton's The Lost World. Although I've read this book at least two times before, I must admit the movie version had warped my memories of the book, so there were many scenes I felt like I was reading them anew. Crichton expands upon the dinosaurs and their presumed behaviors. I loved that Ian Malcolm was back, although for me, Sarah Harding quickly took over. She's intelligent and fearless, and I doubt anyone would have made it out alive if she hadn't decided to come on this adventure to Isla Sorna. Although not quite as fantastic as Jurassic Park, The Lost World by Michael Crichton is an exciting read.

By the way, I wish the movies had made use of the chameleon-type dinosaurs. They were really cool in how their skin changed to match their surroundings and would have been visually stunning in one of the movies.

Another Michael Crichton winner!

I'm a huge Michael Crichton fan, and this book is no disappointment! It takes place after the first Jurassic Park book, and has many twists and turns. The book arrived quickly and in good condition. Adding this one to my favorites list. If you like dinosaurs, suspense, the Jurassic Park films, or even just a wild ride, give this book a shot! Heads up though, it is in the PG-13 area, or slightly above for gore and language.
