So glad I accidentally found this book!

Let me just start by saying that I'm an English teacher and run a playgroup so I'm always so weary about Muslim children's books. Namely because they're really not child friendly at all...too much writing, too many difficult words and boring pictures. I have lost count of the amount of times I've bought books for my 4 year old and had to store them away for when he's older. I also struggle to find books I can read at the Muslim playgroup because, well....like I said, everything out there is either not childish at all or just plain boring.
This one is different. The rhyming couplets are smart and catchy. The pictures are vibrant and engaging. The way the story is told is unique and simple at the same time. I would read this to members of the playgroup who range from ages 2-6 and I can assure you that none of them will lose interest or get lost in all the words. I can't wait to discover more books from this author who I happened to stumble upon by accident. Finally a Muslim children's book that is on the same level as the secular children's picture book industry. There are so few out there so this one is a keeper! I would just suggest that any future books by the author are a bit bigger. This one is ever so slightly smaller than A4 size which is great and very common for kids' books, but I guess it's just my personal taste, I like my kiddie books nice and huge haha. If you buy this you won't be disappointed and most importantly neither will your child. A great way to introduce a story from the Quran to little ones.

Book review: A Whale Of A Wish, by Razana Noor.

A very unique interpretation of the famous story of Prophet Yunus (pbuh) by Razana Noor, retold in traditional rhyme-form and refrains from the often over-looked whale. This famous Abrahamic story aptly entitled 'A Whale Of A Wish', is well known in the three major faiths (story of Jonas) but interestingly, a first of how the story unfolded from the view of the very big whale.

The story depicts the journey of the Whale who goes on a quest to help others in order to please God - a clear message to all. In his journey, he encounters many sea creatures finally feeling the call to save the special messenger Prophet Yunus (pbuh) by swallowing him up for a set period of time.

The fantastic illustrations by the famous Rahima Begum, brings the story alive and keeps children captivated. Some of the language used needs to be broken down for the younger ones; here, a glossary would have been highly useful. However, the great art-work speaks volumes, crossing all language-barriers.

The sing-song rhythm and references to Allah, are markers for discussion points with readers and could be effective in school assemblies as well as part of the school curriculum. The whale is usually depicted as a mysterious, dark and fearsome character; however, Razana Noor cleverly conveys the whale also has feelings and emotions. This is pivotal in this interpretation, creating empathy with readers and adults alike. The visual representation of the Prophet as a symbolic shining light, opens up important questions as to why Islam does not draw images of their special people.

The only critique to be commented upon is the ending was quite abrupt and left a feeling of wanting more. However, that can only be a good thing, as the story was interesting enough for children to hear or read more. The story could have really delved into a rich adventure, reinforcing patience, forgiveness and the special prayer that is associated with this famous Qur'anic recount: “There is no God but You, Glorified be You! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers.”

The italicised words in the poetic narrative, generally assumed for emphasis, was over-used and purpose slightly confusing. A glossary or more simplistic vocabulary would have been very useful so children as young as three are able to access the book.

All in all, a highly recommended book to add to any household or classroom, giving room to discuss our purpose in doing good only for the Sake of God; benefits of being kind and compassionate. The rich illustrations from the famous Rahima Begum combined with the unique angle of the book, really makes it a must-have. To quote a 7 year old reader, "I like that it is different, and about the whale. The whale is funny when it vomits, it doesn't do that in the original story. I especially love the pictures and like that it rhymes."

Missing some elements

This book has a lot of potential. it's clever rhyming prose reminds me of other authors such as Julia Donaldson. It's a simple short story about the story of Prophet Yunus but told from the whale's perspective. However in keeping the story short we have no back story. Why the Prophet was kept in the whale and why he was praying for forgiveness for many days and many nights. Without back story children begin to wonder why Allah was punishing the Prophet.

Just the right mix of inspiration and practical information

This was a very good inspirational and motivational short read. Stylistically, it reminded me in many ways of the writings and lectures of Neville Goddard, though the information contained in this book is, in content, infinitely more practical and reality based. Throughout the course of the work, the reader is constantly reminded that many of the blocks to success come not from external circumstances, but from our own minds and how they work.

Thomas Abreu has clearly done a great deal of research into the psychology and habits of successful people. However, the work is for from dryly academic. In nearly every chapter, the author presents easy to implement real life suggestions that the reader can use to think more successfully. He also illustrates many of the mindsets that, in many cases, lead to failure and stagnation. In particular, I was quite impressed with the author's suggestions on how to maximize the productivity and value of workers by visualizing them at their best, praising them for their successes, and helping them to realize your potential vision of their own work.

Overall, this book is clearly geared toward business, but the principles presented in it are applicable in relationships, personal goals, and even health and fitness goals. A good balance of inspiration and motivation with practical suggestions that readers can put into use in every day life. Definitely well worth reading!

Think big.

Sometimes the most failures that I got is when I didn't believe in myself. When I know a task is already quite impossible to make, without even trying, I already give up. I am a pessimist I admit. My friend recommended me this book, and well, it got me interested and having a second thought on viewing life. In this book I have learned some of the power of thinking big. Indeed, it can make a difference.

Nice thinking book

This is not equivalent to I thought yet rather this book surpassed my longing extraordinarily! It has this substance that I genuinely appreciate. It includes me unmistakable information's that has strong foundation like some other book I venerate. I feel that the thoughts are the same and are not new. It is the same as Tony Robbins. I suggest Tony Robbins and Robert Kiyosaki books for achievement.

Alex Antonov is a very passionate technologist with a hunger to learn new tools, languages, techniques, and concepts behind enterprise application design. His specialty lies in designing highly scalable distributed large-scale enterprise systems, which he has been successfully doing for the last 12 years. He is also a frequent presenter on the topics of architecture and design at conferences such as UberConf, JavaOne, and Spring 2GX. Alex joined Orbitz Worldwide in 2004, and in his current role of Senior Principal Engineer, he is responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance in the development of foundational technologies, core libraries, and APIs for enterprise-wide use, as well as establishing and maintaining common design principles and standards used within the company and integration of new software development practices within the development community. He has extensive experience in enterprise architecture designing distributed systems, and spends a lot of time doing object domain modeling and focusing on domain-driven design and behavior-driven development and testing. Prior to that, Alex was a lead engineer in the same team that was responsible for web application frameworks and developing common practices and additional functionality on top of Spring MVC and Webflow. Great information that you probably won't get from other Spring Boot books

I recently starting learning Spring Boot and it's been very interesting. Developers will know though that writing the code and having it running locally isn't even half the job. Customisation for environments, deployment tasks and adding monitoring etc. can add just as much time.
That's why I was very pleased with this book, I was half expecting it to be a series of small tutorials about coding with Spring Boot but it takes a very unusual approach that covers the edge cases of development and has a strong focus on what Spring Boot brings to the table. The Application Testing chapter is very good and cover using Mockito, Cucumber and Spock.
The deployment chapters cover building an executable jar, accessing environment specific variables and most interesting for me, creating Docker images. It also covers application monitoring, another aspect Spring Boot gives you for free.
I'm still reading through the book but it's definitely one that's full of information that you won't normally get in development books. It's well written and easy to dive into because the chapters are all self contained.
If you're interested in Spring Boot, I strongly recommend this in addition to one about developing in Spring Boot.

A big idea in 21 days, breakthrough business concepts galore and much more besides. This is the brave claim by this business guru. Will it deliver? Are you capable to jump on board and seize this gushing firehose of advice?

The author obviously believes so, offering up what he describes as a “disciplined creative process to create original and practical new business concepts” – all of this for less than one hour a day of effort for 21 days.

Now, this reviewer probably needs to turn the cold water tap on this enthusiasm. It is conceivable that it can work for some, but manage your expectations accordingly. At the very least it will have you thinking and the discipline of setting aside an hour a day to look at the problem, the issue or your future is by no means a bad idea. You might be dog-tired, busy with other work and your partner is complaining they don’t see you but you should, must even, still find that one hour. Just like in business, especially when you are a one-man company or in a start-up phase with a small team, you might not have the luxury of waiting until tomorrow. Skip a day and the world might not stop turning, but now you have twice as much to think about… skip that and then what? You’ll either give up entirely, cut corners and mess up in your rush to catch-up.

The author guides you through the idea creation and exploitation processes, obviously in a superficial amount of detail but enough for the task at hand. You cannot afford to be overwhelmed at this stage.

The good thing is that you are not going to break the bank by buying this book. You could treat it as an indulgence, an intellectual exercise, a boot camp for your business brain. If it leads to anything that’s all well and good. You could even use it as an excuse to daydream or make a dry run for 21 days and maybe even some great business idea will emerge from this process.

It was quite inspirational, being more evolutionary than revolutionary. Some may be tempted to short-circuit the book and just pick a few bits of advice out of the wider programme. That can work too.

Incredibly Good Book on Nutrition with Diet Tips Added

THe book is 256 pages long and it takes the form of Dr. Reuban's previous sex books (Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask.etc). A person basically asks a questions in bold headings and he answers it with a wide variet of wit and style. It feels just like Dr. Reuban is right there talking to you the person.
The book premise is very simple. The majority of the things the media tells us is wrong. Very wrong. So wrong that he tells us that much of our diseases and troubles involving the body (cancer, diabetes,etc) can be prevented if we simply take the precautinos he tells us in this book. His diet, or what you can do to be healthy can be summed up in one sentence:Eat food in their natural form, these being fruits and vegetables, and other forms of food in their natural form. He rants on the FDA and The Food Industry. He makes the Food Industry into monsters.
The book is good. Very good in fact that I gave it five stars for I totally agree with the premise that the main thing causing for Americans, including me, to become unhealthy is simply the additives and preservatives added. Reuban goes on to say that the chemicals found in our food cause cancer and even sperm count. He also says in the book that the reason non-industrialized countries like Georgia have much less of cancer and diabetes is because their food is natural.
To sum up his diet: Eat things in their natural form regardless of the fat. Don't buy food where the ingrediants are unpronunciable. Don't buy refined sugar, or enriched bread. Don't drink soda. I recommend you also get his other book: The Save-Your-Life Diet. Don't worry if its out of print. It can probaby be found in a used book store.

A truth-packed book with facts & no fiction about nutrition.

I read Dr. Reuben's book 20 years ago to answer some questions I had about the big vitamin fad that was happening. Unfortunately, I did not read his book in its entirety, but got the answers I was searching for - - mainly that I did not need suppliments, but that a year's supply of vitamins would fill a thimble. Today I am in a nutritional Ph.d. program, and thought I should revisit Dr. Reuben's book. I could not put the book down. It has humor and an honest approach to a subject that it is impossible to find the truth because everyone wants a piece of my pocketbook! I laughed, I cried in horror at the things I read. I am grateful that Dr. Reuben was brave enough to tell the Emerior he had no clothes. You will regret NOT reading this book!

The author is a proponent of the health food diet regimen.
He recommends not to consume junk food in order to minimize vitamin deficiencies. The work explains the following about
vitamins, cooking and canning:
o 30% of vitamins are lost in cooking/canning
o 25% of the vitamin content is lost in sterilization
o 27% of vitamins are lost in sterilization
o 12% is lost when you heat the contents of a can
In addition, the book promotes Vitamin B. Fried liver provides
vitamin A. Lemon juice is a good source of the vitamin C.
Brewer's yeast and B12 magnifies the B 12 vitamin. He explains
that natural vitamins are better than synthetic vitamins.
Soil impacts vitamins. Too much iron can produce fatal E-coli
whereas too little dietary vitamin can result in general lethargy. Dietary iron is in meat, whole wheat and whole bran.
This book is an excellent value for any health professional
or enthusiast.

This testimony concerning Auschwitz and the atrocities which were enacted there has been edited and extracted by Peter Weiss into a dramatic document that relies solely and completely on the facts for its effectiveness. There is no artistic license, no manipulation of facts and figures, no rearrangement of events for theatrical effect. Nameless witnesses stand and recall their appalling memories of Auschwitz, allowing us to bear witness to their painful and painstaking search for truth and, ultimately, justice. What emerges is a chastening and purging documentary of deeply moving power. The Investigation was premiered on October 19th, 1965, in thirteen theatres in East and West Germany. At the same time, a produced reading was given under Peter Brook at the Aldwych Theatre in London. As with Peter Weiss' The Marot/Sade, productions have mushroomed throughout the world, effectively consolidating a remarkable literary reputation.

Heart-Wrenching

I am the kind of girl that picks up a book and doesn't stop till the last page. But this book is so emotionally overwhelming that I had to stop every once in a while so I wasn't completely washed with sorrow. I would recommend this book to anyone.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ (OR SEE) THIS PLAY

I've wanted to direct Peter Weiss's The Investigation since I first read it in translation in the mid-sixties. Weiss is better known for his brilliant Marat/Sade, a reinterpretation of the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat by Charlotte Corday as staged by the marquis de Sade with the inmates of the mental asylum at Charenton. It's an awesome play.

But The Investigation in its own way is as revolutionary as Marat/Sade. More germane to my concerns, it's fairly easily adaptable to Readers' Theater. The play is presented as a series of eleven "Songs." (They aren't sung songs, but rather prose -talked--songs. It's Brecht-Talk to call them "Songs".) Each song/scene details some aspect of the atrocities committed upon the prisoners in the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Most, perhaps all, of the text of the play is taken verbatim from the transcripts of the Nuremberg Trials (November 20, 1945, to October 1, 1946), which tried German war criminals. If the parts in the play were not double-cast, it would require twenty-eight actors (two of them women). The play is also too long: it would have to be shortened.

The dialogue is chilling, made even the more so by being presented in so low a key. There's almost no action: witnesses ascend and leave the witness stand, the prosecuting attorney and the defense counsel wrangle before the judge. Some functionaries who collaborated in maintaining the camp system are called as witnesses. All of them deny knowledge of what took place, even of what they could read in account books or see from the windows of their workrooms. The accused are monsters, whether on the stand testifying or simply acting the boor in their seats. The bulk of the witnesses are the former prisoners: a woman forced to work as secretary for a Nazi boss who likes to beat prisoners to death, a political partisan subjected to torture and himself beaten near to death, mothers separated from husbands and children, never to hear of them again.

It's great theater. I'm considering it for a local Readers' Theater and I think it would work: the characters can be doubled to keep the cast size in bounds, there's no set to worry about and there's enough overlap to permit cutting. That's essential, because the play is quite long at 313 pages in print but the message cannot be weakened.

I have two concerns. The first is the emotional charge the testimony delivers. It's far from cocktail theater. People may experience feelings they'd rather not feel on an afternoon or evening entertainment junket. The second is whether the play is dated now: will its moral urgency seem out of date when expended on an injustice now sixty-five years past

An Overwhelming Experience

I have not read this book yet but I did listen to the BBC radio version broadcast around the year 1967 I think. I would have been thirteen or fourteen years old at that time. I was at home, alone, and came upon it by chance, twiddling the dials looking for something interesting. The play caused me a concatenation of emotions: horror, revulsion, disbelief and, it must be said, a kind of fascination I regard it as one of the formative moments of my education as it lay before me, at a very impressionable age, the unimaginable possibilities of human cruelty. No details spared, the facts about what happened at Auschwitz are presented as evidence in a courtroom, giving it an immense understated power and resonance. Listeners/readers are left to paint their own picture and draw their own conclusions. My conclusions are quite beyond words at this time. But as the distance in time from these events lengthens beyond living memory, their reverberation only becomes louder it seems to me, not least because of subsequent state-sanctioned holocausts, for example in Mao's China or more recently in Congo, Yugoslavia, and Rwanda. "The Investigation" has been part of my own investigation into human violence. To quote Krishnamurti:
"This is really the maim issue - what can you as a human being, living in this country, do when you see the terrible disorder brought about by the army, the politicians and the priests, by individuals with their selfishness, their arrogance, their brutality and their violence. (...) And we have to be serious because the house is burning, not somebody else's house but our own house is on fire. We have to be very serious, not only to put the fire out, but also to bring about a different kind of house that cannot catch fire at any time, which means living a life of absolute inward order where there is no war, no fear. "

This Book. This Book. Everyone needs to read this book. If there is one book you read this year that will help you grow - this is it.

Sorry. You are totally responsible for how you feel, and how you feel determines is you grow or die. You can't do both, and no matter what, your doing one or the other.

This book will help you snap into grow mode.

I also recommend "You are the Placebo" by Dr. Joe Dispenza. Another great book driving the same point home. Both books compliment each other, but I'd recommend reading this one first.

More than just DNA make a human being...

Fascinating ethical explanation.... DNA is only the Blueprint of our inheritance, what really affects and designs the individual is the Environment we are raised in.... Nature and Nurture are the balancing tools at our disposal... I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking understanding.... Great "How to" book. We can change whatever we want to change in ourselves but we must start on the sub-conscience level, first.

Dr. Lipton at his best!

I'm a big fan of Dr. Lipton and his teachings. How he explains the function of the cells, where the brain of the cell is located and how genes can be epigenetically modified for the good and bad is fascinating and easy to understand. Lipton gives mankind hope for the future. It's all about the environment and we can do something about that. We're not victims of our genes like so many like us to be. Highly recommend this book and also the 'Wisdom of Your Cells' (only available as an ebook or audio).

Great Series!

Rarely are you able to read books out of sequence in a Series, and its okay. Each of the books in the David Wolf saga can stand on their own, which is quite a feat in a day where there are book series that can stretch into oblivion. I read Book 3, then Book 1, and had to get Book 2, the Silversmith. Filled with likeable characters with human failings, and vicious well painted criminals and bullies alike, this series does not disappoint.

A very nice compliment and extension of the first book in the David Wolf Series (Foreign Deceit). Jeff picks right up where he left off from book number 1--having the main character immediately thrust back into issues upon his return from overseas. A fast moving, smartly written and still-believable and fun story. I think it took me perhaps 2 days to power through because--just like book 1, I just really wanted to see what would happen next. In the idea of other characters I have come to love reading-Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp, Gabriel Allon--David Wolf is a wonderful yet flawed hero!! You can't help but root for him. Keep them coming, Jeff!!

Very different setting from the fist David Wolf book, but just as fast paced and enthralling. Great, believable action with good character development. Will be very interested to see if there is a sequel. Looking forward to more adventures from this author.

Excellent ideas - sparse on methodology

Some excellent ideas to approach problems or opportunities with a set of different perspectives. Each card represents an idea, gives a brief explanation and 1 or 2 lines on how it was used in an ideo project. If you are a creative person and understand how the different ideas could be applied, the deck can be very valuable. However, you basically have to develop your own methodology from the core idea that they suggest. Was it worth the purchase? Maybe, the ideas are very handy. Is it very useful? Only if you put in some effort developing your own methodology and doing some additional research. It's pretty sparse. Watch the w5 show from the 1990s where ideo was profiled. You will get a lot out of that video.

Great tool!

The cards are very useful. They give you different approaches to any project.
They are good if you working alone, in a creative group or doing research with clients
or costumers.

A great money making scheme for very little effort...

I myself have not bought the box of method cards but I have used someone else's. A useful tool for students and industry professionals? No doubt, even if you know all of this stuff it can be easy to forget different approaches to take with a project. It is a very handy tool for students. However, I would seriously begrudge paying $49 for a set of cards, which frankly, if IDEO was really bothered about empowering the minds of a younger generation of designers they would offer this to universities as an open source toolkit!

In essence I feel this is a great money making and marketing scheme for IDEO. "Look at us we are helping budding designers and business professionals to innovate." Oh but the catch is you have to pay $49 and we're going to give you very limited information about how to implement these methods and where they work successfully and where the pitfalls are.

My advice...gather as much information as you can for free across the internet...blogs, documentary videos etc. Make use of your uni library (yes, the library! You have 1,000s of helpful design books at your disposal for FREE! Something I failed to realise until my final year). Take all of this information and bookmark it, take notes whatever it takes, compile it all together and create your own method cards! If you want them in printed format get them printed!

All that being said I would probably purchase the method cards if they were about 60% of the price but not at this amount. It seems a great way for IDEO to extort naive, impressionable young students.
