About the Author
Douglas A. Skoog (deceased) earned a B.S. in chemistry from Oregon State University and received his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Illinois. The lead author of several best-selling texts, Dr. Skoog was the 1999 recipient of the American Chemical Society award in analytical chemistry, sponsored by the Fisher Scientific Company. That same year, he was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1993, he received the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award for Excellence in Teaching. He was a Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University.

F. James Holler is a Professor of Chemistry and recipient of the Alumni Association Great Teacher Award at the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. In addition to his role as co-author of several best-selling texts, he is co-creator of the world-famous Periodic Table of Comic Books.

Stanley R. Crouch is Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University. He received his undergraduate and M.S. degrees from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Illinois. He is the recipient of the 2001 American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation and the 1996 ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award for Excellence in Teaching.

What better way is there to learn about poetry than penning a few yourself? Once you get the hang of acrostic poems, you'll probably be creating them all the time. Of course Brian Cleary is a master of verse, who has now branched out into haiku, lantern poetry, concrete, and now acrostic. There are lessons to be learned and, in addition to teaching us how to write the acrostic poem, he gives some very visual fun example of some. Young students are encouraged to create a few of their own.

Brian Cleary's introduction lets us know that not all poetry is created equal and that acrostic poems "can be structured in a variety of ways." The instructions and visuals are a perfect way to introduce the acrostic to the young student. The first letter of each poem is highlighted Ina bright red, making it easy to understand the structure of an acrostic poem. A mini-biographical acrostic about himself is an excellent example.

BRIAN:

"Bow-tie wearer.

"Really likes baseball.

"Insanely happy.

"Always going places.

"Never eats centipedes."

Young students are give a list of suggestions, something that just might kick start them into a fun venture into poetry. Cleary states that you must "Look down the side of the page, and you'll see that the poem spells out my first name" and "the words or phrases built off that first letter help describe that subject." Undoubtedly, the first acrostic poem in a homeschool or classroom assignment will find many students creating one with their own names,

I love the creative, fun slant Cleary infectiously inserts into the books in this new “Poetry Adventure” series. The artwork pops and has just the right amount of humor to interest young students. It’s far from boring and the poetry is very kid friendly. My favorite Cleary series, of course, are the CATegorical ones. Children in our area, especially the reluctant readers, love them!

A Cute Book on Poetry, Kids will Love it!

This is a great book to read or to use when teaching or learning about poetry. In the description it states: Bow-Tie Pasta is packed with acrostics to make you snicker and snort. And when you've finished reading, you can try your hand at writing your own poems! This is a wonderful description of this book. I loved the poems and learned something about Acrostic Poetry while reading it. From GIGGLES to LIBRARY, from INDIA to HOTDOG, you can't help but smile when reading these poems. There is a section at the beginning of the book descibing what an Acrostic Poem is and at the end their are resources you can look at on the internet. I recommend that all English classrooms and school libraries get a copy of this book.

This is a great treatment of a form of poetry that kids love to write. The poems are fun and the pictures are a good accompaniment. I was impressed and want to recommend it for my children's collection. There was even a good one about the Library.

Paul Martineau is associate curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Britt Salvesen is curator and head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department and the Prints and Drawings Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

I did view the movie which I also recommend having. It just helps explain the man

.....still "reviewing" the book as I've recently purchased several on Mapplethorpe including the movie CD of his life with Sam Wagstaff. I did view the movie which I also recommend having. It just helps explain the man....actually both men to some degree. Mapplethorpe was a complicated man....or so it seems through the eyes of books about him and of course his photography. If you're a collector of all things Mapplethorpe this is one for the collection.

A lifesaver!

This book has become an indispensible resource for me. One of the huge challenges of being an ESL teacher is to figure out how to explain more or less logically what native speakers know intuitively. I am often stymied by grammar exercises in workbooks that are not properly explained, have too few examples, or the vocabulary in the examples is too difficult. Dixson avoids all these problems. This book is also great when you feel a quick review of a basic point is needed, or just for a quick quiz. What ESL student doesn't need to periodically review irregular verbs? You'll use it over and over once you buy it, guaranteed!

As a high school student I had no problem speaking correctly, but could not explain the rules of English. I found 'Dixon's Graded English' helpful. Years later, when teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in Chile, SA, the book became a godsend to help students and Spanish speaking coworkers, as well as a ready reference for me. In years of moving, many of my books have been lost, but I am now teaching a non-native speaker some of the fundamentals of English grammar. Of all the texts I needed to replace, Dixon's Graded English is of the greatest value. Not only are the rules simplified in explanation, but the exercises provided are invaluable.

It is simple and straight forward but some glaring holes ...

It is simple and straight forward but some glaring holes in the strategy.
I don't know of a realtor that will consistently put in offers at 60% of listing price and in a buyers market you wouldn't be landing these deals anyways. Also he is offer off of the listing price of the property which means nothing accept to the seller. You need to offer off the ARV (After Repair Value) of the property which he does not go into.
It is an interesting strategy but I don't see it working long term as you will burn out your real estate agent by making so many offers at low prices as most people on the MLS are not desperate enough buyers to accept those low offers. He does admit it is a numbers game, so I am sure you would land one every once in a while.

Great handbook for Mobile Therapists!

I am a Mobile Therapist for children ages 3-21, many of which are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. I do not have a Psychology degree, but rather went the Social Work route, so I don't always have the same knowledge base other therapists have when it comes to mental health diagnoses. This workbook has helped me tremendously when working with my clients with ADHD. It has so many useful activities and worksheets that address a whole spectrum of issues that kids face, from impulse control to eating habits to routines. This book is definitely a keeper!

Really? Worksheets for kids who already have difficulty sitting still?

I find this workbook laughable. It's so hard to use this with kids who have ADHD (especially hyperactive) because they're all over the place! I could use this a bit more with my inattentive kids, but it really is not appropriate for the whole spectrum of children who have ADHD.

When I read the blurb I was caught right away. I mean who doesn’t love stories about high school sweethearts?

Meet Ali and Flynn -high school students looking forward to taking on the world. Flynn is the photojournalist for the high school paper. Little did he know that when he would be meeting the reporter for the school's paper she would bring along her friend. It all started with a look and in the end a look is all it takes, right?

She’d turned toward me, and for the first time, I looked at her. Really looked. Huge, gorgeous brown eyes gazed back at me, and I was gone.

And with that history was made. The friendship quickly escalated to love and let's be honest, at 16 you think that you will be with that person forever. They had all their plans laid out for them; go away to college together, travel the world together, get away from their small town. It was going to be all or nothing.

Except on graduation day, only one of them left. Flynn would not be stuck in this little town no matter if he left his heart there.

Eight years later, eight long years later, Flynn is coming back to town. He comes back to town the big honcho photo journalist, he made all his dreams come true. The only problem is that he did it all alone. He has it in his mind to get in and get out, just one problem. Actually it’s an eight year old problem!

“You weren’t here.” I covered my face with my hands. “You were gone, and you’d told me that night that nothing and no one was going to hold you back. When I asked you to stay with me, you told me that if you did, you’d end up hating me. Resenting me. So strangely enough, the idea of asking you to come back was not very appealing.”

When he comes face to face with Ali and her eight-year-old daughter, he is shocked and utterly speechless. For eight years he thought that she didn’t love him, he thought she didn’t choose him. For eight years she thought he forgot all about the girl who held his heart.

So now lays another dilemma, does he leave everything behind again or does he finally choose the girl who he loves, does he chose the first one; the first one he gave his heart to, the first one he spoke about his dreams to, the first one who loved him and can give him everything!

Ali Reynolds has raised her daughter alone for seven years, with no help but from her offer brother. Now he has a serious girlfriend and she is feeling like a third wheel. At the same time, the father of her child is back in town in mourning. Flynn Evans is a photojournalist and has travelled the world, never returning to his small hometown since leaving after high school. The heartbreak from the breakup with Ali was just too much. But when there is a tragedy in the family, he has to return, only to find out he has a daughter and the girl he loved is still the one for him. As they sort through the resentment of their past and the challenges of the present they work to find a future together.
In this story, Tawdra focused more on the trouble that fear creates and the opportunities lost through it. The conflict of this story, while it is one that I have seen before and could have been really trite and tired was beautifully done. Ali was afraid but worked to move past it, while keeping the past in mind as a lesson learned. Flynn, while angry, was able to see the beauty of his situation with Ali and their daughter, learning and growing in order to keep them. This was not my favorite of all the stories in the series but it was very good. They just seemed very caught up in their past or almost 9 years. They are both adults with a child but occasionally, it seemed like they were still in high school.Of course, they both grew and blossomed beautifully but just sometimes I felt like they were not acting their ages. Of course, this makes it more human and more real, indicating the talent of Tawdra. It was also a great continuation of the seeds sowed in the first book with Meghan and Sam

Wonderful Romance

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a beautifully executed romance that managed to change around all my preconceived notions about Flynn and Ali from the previous book. I started the book determined to hate Flynn all the way through for abandoning his family, but somewhere along the line I began to hope for happiness between these two. Amazing!

We met Ali in the previous book and she was the picture perfect single mother. She has an adorable daughter that she’s raised on her own because she didn’t reach out to tell the ex for abandoned her that she was pregnant. When a funeral brings Flynn back to town, it’s very obvious that now’s the time for Ali to come clean about her daughter’s father. The small town hasn’t managed to put it together, but it’s only a matter of time. Luckily, Ali has a good support system to help her through this troubling time. Just as lucky for her, Flynn has never actually stopped loving her.

These two are adorable in an almost high school way. They have to find a way to co-parent, but they end up going way beyond that. Where they end up is so much better than where they would have been had he stayed, so I’m ok with everyone forgiving him. I love these two and was super happy about this HEA.
