A Satisfying Tale

Wow! The Billionaire's Proposal was steamy! But the steam is not the most impressive part about this book; it's the story. Emma Rose has weaved together a compelling tale that draws you in from the first scene to the last word. The main character, Helen is interesting and as a reader I felt compassion for her situation. The story seemed to offer a much needed catharsis for the character. The tastiest part of this read is the coupling of Helen and Adam. Right from their initial meeting they have such a palpable magnetism. With each word I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. The ending left me hungry for more. I can hardly wait to read the next book in this series.

Great book for anyone looking for a good erotic short story. This book is tailored more towards S&M since Adam is characterized as an alpha male and Helen is a more submissive character. This book also features female pleasure instead of male pleasure which makes it a particularly good read for women. Emma Rose is a very good writer, and her stories will not disappoint readers. This book is the first book in the new Billionaire series, so readers can enjoy this short story and expect to see more of this couple in other books as well. I would highly recommend this book.

This erotica tale is more than a dirty story. It's hot, sure, but there are elements in it that draw you in, captivate you, and keep you turning the pages. It titillates with desires so many of us have but would never delve into.

About the Author

Shun Lien Chuang, PhD, is the MacClinchie Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His research centers on semiconductor optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, IEEE, and the Optical Society of America. He received the Engineering Excellence Award from the OSA, the Distinguished Lecturer Award and the William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award from the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society, and the Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Very detailed, Nice section on calculating strain effects...

I have mainly used this book to help me understand how to incorporate the effects of tensile and compressive strain in quantum well calculations. It does this very clearly. It covers many other topics, but the main points are: 1) This is a graduate-level text probably unsuitable as a first exposure to this area for undergraduates; and 2) the author is not afraid of diving into the technical nitty-gritty of the areas he covers. He does a great job of explaining concepts in a relatively short amount of text (i.e. it is terse, yet understandable for the most part) and he provides good detail, including much data on III-V material properties. As another example, it gives a complete but condensed discussion of the Marcatili and effective index approximations for calculating single mode cutoffs in rectangular dielectric waveguides for lasers or PICs. This is a great reference book for those who actually want to calculate or design something without using a canned program.

Excellent book for basic physics of optoelectronics

The book starts with the very basic equations of electromagnetic and semiconductor theory and builds up to more advanced topics such as band structure calculations for semiconductors including strained quantum wells, various optical transitions processes, optical absorption spectra, etc. In addition, the book covers the basic theory of laser cavity resonance and this includes the distributed feedback laser theory. Various waveguide, electro-optical modulators and photodetector principles are also treated in clear detail. The book brings you up to the level of which the research papers in the optoelectronic area has been written.

good book, but...

First of all, I want to express regret that there is no excellent book covering the area of theory, fabrication, characterization of semiconductor lasers/devices. Some are too easy and some are too difficult. The symbols and convention are not unified at all, even simple "rate equations" have a lot of versions.

Overall, this book is good for graduate students. A good companion for advanced study. However, I don't like too many equations with only few explanations. By the way, on the small signal analysis of laser modulation, I recommend Coldren's "Diode lasers and photonic integrated circuits". Rate equations there make more sense to me. If you find it hard to understand, maybe try Parker's "Physics of Optoelectronics", an 5-star book. The strength of this book is its completeness, especially on optics, quantum mechanics and electromagnetics.

About the Author

Stephen J. Silverman is Professor of Education and Chair of the Department of Biobehavioral Sciences at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a native of Philadelphia and holds a bachelor’s degree from Temple University, a master’s degree from Washington State University, and a doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His research focuses on teaching and learning in physical education and on methods for conducting research in field settings. He has authored numerous research articles and chapters, and is coauthor of a number of books. He has served as editor of two research journals, is an experienced research consultant, has directed graduate students, and has, for many years, taught classes in research methods, statistics, and measurement. Waneen Wyrick Spirduso is the Mauzy Regents Professor Emerita in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on the effects of aging and the mechanisms of motor control. She has been a prolific contributor to the research literature and has authored textbooks related to research methods and aging. At first glance, this book's photos and illustrations, which are just as important as the text in an exercise book, seem dated and bland. But a reading of the text and a closer examination of the illustrations reveal that what makes this yoga text different and worthwhile is the author's commitment to tying yoga's spiritual aspects to its physical components. Farhi (The Breathing Book) discusses the "Ten Living Principles," or the yamas ("wise characteristics") and the niyamas ("codes for living soulfully"), and also considers the importance of the asanas ("postures") in grounding spirituality in the body. However, Farhi does far more than provide descriptions and illustrations of postures. At the beginning of each new section, she has readers move through one or two core poses. She then asks them to focus on the way they feel physically while performing the pose. Using these core poses, she moves on to postures of greater complexity while allowing for different levels of ability. One possible problem for beginners is her use of posture names to describe poses that involve movement from one posture to the next (e.g., the sun salutation or the downward dog). Recommended for public libraries as well as academic libraries where yoga is a part of the curriculum, this may also be a worthwhile purchase for hospital or health sciences libraries.

If I could only buy one yoga book.

I'm a forty-seven year old man who has been practicing yoga for less than a year. In that time I have read quite a few books on the subject. I was surprised to find so many opinions, theories, teachers, schools, and styles. Yet they all seemed to fall short of giving really clear and understandable explanations of the mechanics of body movement. When I read "Yoga, Mind, Body &Spirit" I quickly recognized it to be, by far, the most logical and reasonable approach to yoga study that I had found. Exercises, refered to as Inquiries, help you to learn for yourself the principles that underlie the practice of yoga. This allows you to begin to fashion a practice tailored to your unique body and its current condition. If I had to choose one book to try and explain the techniqes and essence of yoga, this would be the one.

My favorite yoga book ever

This is the yoga book I've been waiting for. I am an active middle age athlete/busy professional who has found that yoga makes me feel good and so I've purchased many books and videos in my efforts to learn more on my own.
For me, Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit pulls together the disciplines (moving principles, anatomy, yamas/niyamas, mediatation) one needs to understand to realize the true benefits of yoga practice. The communication of these areas through the written word, photographs and illustrations (incredible helpful), and organization and layout makes every page a gem. Most of all the spirit of Donna Farhi's own "digging" into the subject area and learning comes through in a generous sharing and caring for the reader's own efforts to yield the fruits of yoga practice. Her crystal clear communication, examples, and her unique way of presenting principles have already enabled me to refocus my own practice into a more enjoyable and transforming experience - without all the stress and struggle I generally brought to my practice.
Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit is a wonderful, enjoyable "workbook" and tool for learning more about your own true nature through yoga. And it is one of the most beautifully produced book I own. It's a great experience.

As a child I practices yoga for years, since then I grew up and became totally plugged and lazy to exercise. My job and life didn't allow for any kind of exercise. As my energy decreased I remembered my childohood. I bought this book and it changed my life. It is by far the best yoga book I have read. It gives full descritions for all levels of proficency, describing in detailed poses breaths and props that may be needed for each move. It also shows illustrations of what to do and what not to do. I liked the anatomy digrams that further explain what positions your body should be in. I also liked thefocus on getting to know your body, and yoga being a 'dance' rather than exercise.

To the magic of architectural creativity

To claim this book just adds to the general tendency of contemporary architecture seeking the immediately shocking, superficial and easily publishable is perhaps a sign of precisely this tendency: people losing the ability to dwell on things long enough for their imagination to come out.

Once applied on actual architecture these concepts would need to be closely linked to program, scale and site to be interesting. However in the initial program-, scale- and siteless condition they are presented in this book, they evoke intense imagination in me. The sketches being hand drawn also adds to this.

You can be impatient and flip through it in five minutes, or you can focus your attention and find the potential and depth these forms have.

Anyway, diverging criticism and provocation is usually a sign of quality.

Extremely helpful if your stuck in the design process

I would recommend this book to anybody who sometimes struggles with coming up with new ideas or often gets stuck in the design process.. I often flick through this book for inspiration or ideas. The forms inside do not necessarily need to be replicated, but can often lead to developments in your own ideas.

A really helpful, small book that should be kept in any architecture students backpack

A highly creative book

I am not an architect but I am fascinated by the multiple varieties of shapes in this book. I can literally dive into this imaginative world.
The architectural context seems to give the work some kind of
justification, which is not needed. It is a fine piece of art all by
itself.
It makes a good present as well, as the price is very reasonable, and can be a source of inspiration not only for architects but also for artists (I personally intend to offer it to a friend who is a wood sculptor). I think this book is an appealing work for all kinds of creative people.

About the Author

Nick Mamatas is the author of several novels including Sensation and The Damned Highway (with Brian Keene). His short stories have appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction, The New Haven Review, and the anthologies Lovecraft Unbound and Long Island Noir, among many other venues. With Ellen Datlow, he co-edited the Bram Stoker Award-winning anthology Haunted Legends. Nick's fiction and work as an editor and anthologist has been nominated for the Hugo, World Fantasy, Shirley Jackson, and four other Bram Stoker Awards. He lives in Berekley, California.

Delve Deeper Into Battle Royale

I would say that there are three main categories for the essays in The Battle Royale Slam Book: critical, historical, and personal. Not all of the essays fall into one of these categories, and some cross categories, but I believe these are the main three. All of the essays are well written and thought provoking. I'm not going to talk about every essay; just a few that made a real impression. The essays cover the original novel, the movie and it's sequel, as well as the manga.
My favorite are the personal essays. The book starts with John Skipp, and while I don't want to give anything away, it is an emotional gut-punch. Brian Keene talks about growing up with guns. Isamu Fukui writes an interesting piece about how seeing the sequel first can change how critically one views that sequel.
Next, we have the essays that take battle Royale, and it's author, and places it in an historical context.A few essays talk about post World War II Japan and how it informed Japanese literature, and Battle Royale in particular. Jason S. Ridler discusses professional wrestling in Japan, and it's influence on Koushan Takami (the author of the original novel). Kostas Paradias talks about the rise of youth gangs in Japan. Of course, all of this is tied in to Battle Royale.
The critical essays are my least favorite. Anyone who has read or seen any of my other reviews knows that I don't delve too deeply into the underlying themes in fiction. I don't mind a story that makes me think, but I read and watch movies to be entertained. (Non-fiction excepted, of course.) These essays are as well written and informative as the rest, they just aren't my favorite.
A few of those that don't quite fit into these three categories include Gregory Lamberson's essay about killer kids in movies, Steven R. Stewart's defense of sexuality in the BR manga, and, my personal favorite, and by far the most entertaining Sam Hamm's essay, comparing BR to the "American Teen Film." Without giving too much away, Hamm's essay ends with his own version of the Battle Royale, featuring many iconic characters from teen films (from Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street, to Pretty In Pink and Home Alone).
Overall, The Battle Royale Slam Book is thought provoking, informative, and entertaining. Whether you are a fan of the novel/movie/manga or someone who likes analysis of books and movies, this is a great book, that provides a deeper look at the Battle Royale phenomenon.

Students, lovers, everyone - get this book!

Most books are about nothing; cult novels are about something, and classics are those which invite multiple readings. (Nick Mamatas, paraphrase)

Not only is Battle Royale - the movie, the book, even the manga series - inviting of multiple readings and different approaches, as these essays illustrate, but it and essays included in the Slam Book help us realize the grim nature of all of us: that we are human. We have our experiences, our rivalries, our hopes. We bleed, we die, and yet we want peace and survival. We want a part of us to live on.

And that's what makes this great.

Seriously, if you like Battle Royale (the novel or the manga...or BOTH) then buy this. It's a great addition to the collection and is actually quite an interesting read. Its basically a bunch of "professional" essays about different themes in BR. What got me hooked was just reading the Introduction of the book.
Sure some essays in the book are better than others, but what the heck, just add this to your BR collection :)

Taking the class with Soldworks 2015-2016. All the information is current enough. The book spells everything out pretty well if you are doing it on your own, with the only exception is the order in which tools and topics are brought up is kind of out of order. If you get stuck look multiple chapters ahead to find the answer.
