About the Author

Morgan McGuire is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Williams College, where he teaches computer graphics and games. He is also a games industry consultant with credits including Titan Quest (2006), ROBLOX (2005), Zen of Sudoku (2007), and a yet-unannounced Activision title. He received his Ph.D in Computer Science from Brown University.

Odest Chadwicke Jenkins is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Brown University. In 2007, Jenkins received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and Young Investigator funding from the Office of Naval Research. He received his Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Southern California.

Great game design reference

This book was a surprise because by chance I discovered it while browsing for game design titles.I currently use it as a reference at work (doing game desgn) and look through it quite often.

I really like it touches a lot of subjects and that it also has design exercises throughout the book. The writing style may be a bit terse, but I had no problem with that - it makes the text read more like a text book (compared with, for example "The Art of Game Design: A book of lenses" or "A theory of fun in game design".

Decepcionante

El libro empieza mostrando que la escritora no ha escrito demasiadas cosas, los di�logos son muy casuales o suenan forzados, lo que hace que agarrarle gusto sea un poco dif�cil. Luego de esto ya que se entra de lleno en las exploraciones de Vinland, Markland y Tierra Verde la lectura mejora al grado de que el relato se hace ameno y muy disfrutable.

Es una pena que cuando lo "interesante" empieza el libro se desvirt�a totalmente. La escritora trata la tesis que m�s gusta a los europeos que es la que implica que todo "hombre blanco" era confundido con un dios. Y de ah� todos los nativos que van conociendo al personaje son sumisos, temerosos y por lo tanto ignorantes. Esto es una falta de respeto hacia esas culturas y para los que la queremos, es una tesis intolerable.

El trabajo hist�rico es bueno, se siguen los relatos de las Sagas Islandesas, de varias leyendas mesoamericanas y de mucho trabajo de las culturas Tolteca/Maya. Es una pena que la autora no haya invesitgado m�s el como se trataba a los extranjeros por los nativos, como por ejemplo a Gonzalo Guerrero que jam�s fue confundido como un dios sino m�s bien fue esclavo y poco a poco gan� estatus.

Acabo de terminar la lectura de Quetzalc�atl: El hombre hurac�n una interesante novela con buenos elementos hist�ricos acerca de la hip�tesis de la Dra. Lucie Dufresne sobre el posible origen n�rdico de uno de los mitos m�s grandes de la ancestral cultura mesoamericana: Quetzalc�atl: la serpiente emplumada. Aunque el estilo narrativo de la autora no es destacable, si lo son los muchos elementos hist�ricos con los que enriquece el relato y que nos permite conocer como era la forma de vida de aquellos antepasados remotos. �Nuestro M�xico siempre ha sido grandioso!

The fifth and sixth chapters describe gyrodynamics and the dynamics of gyroscopic instruments, covering such topics as the displacement of a rigid body, precession and nutation of the Earth's polar axis, oscillation of the gyrocompass, and inertial navigation.
Chapter 7 is an examination of space vehicle motion, with analyses of general equations in body conditions and their transformation to inertial coordinates, attitude drift of space vehicles, and variable mass. The eighth chapter discusses optimization of the performance of single-stage and multistage rockets. Chapter 9 deals with generalized theories of mechanics, including holonomic and non-holonomic systems, Lagrange's Equation for impulsive forces, and missile dynamics analysis.
Throughout this clear, comprehensive text, practice problems (with answers to many) aid the student in mastering analytic techniques, and numerous charts and diagrams reinforce each lesson. 1961 edition.

small book with huge impact

Introduction to Space Dynamics

When this little book came out, in the early sixties, it created quite an impact. For one thing, it marks the transition from the "old astrodynamics" to the "new". The term "astrodynamics" is attributed to the late Samuel Herrick, and was coined in the forties or early fifties. Prior to sputnik, astrodynamics was heavily centered on determining the orbits of comets and asteroids from optical observations. When artificial satellites became imminent, the emphasis shifted to determining physical constants (e.g., figure of the earth) from satellite tracking data.

"Introduction to Space Dynamics" represents a new departure. First, it places considerable emphasis on launch vehicle (rocket) performance, including some optimization analysis based on the calculus of variations. The older texts tended to completely ignore this topic (possibly because much was classified). Also, except for Lawden's monograph, many of the papers on optimized launch vehicle performance were difficult to obtain - and generally difficult to read. Second, Thomson inserts considerable material on gyroscopic motion, stabilized platforms, and inertial navigation. This represents a transition away from the optical-tracking-orientation of earlier texts. Thomson's book also enjoys the benefit of more modern notation, and uses vector and matrix notation throughout.

A curious included topic -- to which I was first introduced by this very book -- is "jet damping." The jet damping effect tends to dampen-out any angular motion of a rocket during thrusting periods. However, the effect is small to the point of usually being negligible. (Witness the notorious instability of rockets, particularly unguided ones.) Considering how much material Thomson devotes to this very specialized topic, one gets the impression that Thomson himself must have performed considerable research on this, and was determined to pass his knowledge on.

It is almost inevitable to compare this book with Herrick's "Astrodynamics", which came out some ten years after "Introduction to Space Dynamics." While Herrick's book is without question beautifully written and very comprehensive, it is basically backward-looking. Thomson's book, on the other hand, was very progressive for its time. Consequently, Thomson's book was very influential; Harrick's book was something of a curiosity, and almost certainly a disappointment for its author.

Despite the forty-some years since its debut, "Introduction to Space Dynamics" is still valuable, and should be read by everyone seriously interested in astrodynamics.

Good Deal

As an electrical engineer working in the space industry, I've been using this book as a self-study reference to better understand the issues related to spacecraft dynamics and control. It lays out the basics of rigid body/space vehicle motion and also contains a nice little introduction to orbital mechanics. Despite the date of publication almost all of the material is still relevant today and is a great bargain for ~$10. I noticed a couple of the reviews mention the difficulty of the material - I would say if you've studied calculus, linear algebra, and physics (mechanics) you have a shot at learning it but it would definitely help if you've taken a college-level dynamics course as well. If you don't have this background you're going to get overwhelmed.

Really good; an excellent introduction to the field

This is really well-written. Although the introduction claims that the text is outdated, it still provides a great introduction to space dynamics, astrodynamics, and dynamics generally. There is an implied understanding in vector mathematics before beginning; the book has an overview of vector calculus, but I think the author assumes you already know it. I actually read this book before taking my undergraduate classes in engineering, and I referenced it many times when my own textbook wasn't as clear as this is. Thomson does use a lot of math, to back up everything he says, but he doesn't bog the text down like math books tend to do. I'm still using some of the math notation I picked up from this book, and my teachers hate it.

that's one of my favorite things about it

This series has it all, and it's anything but cliched. In fact, that's one of my favorite things about it: the originality. Jordan creates his own monsters (Trollocs, Fades, Draghkars, Gray Men, etc.) instead of just dumping more of the same old orcs, goblins, trolls, elves, etc. on you. The only complaint I might have about the story so far (I'm on volume 4) is that while I can initially see the reason why Rand and all of his friends don't like or trust the Aes Sedai (women with the ability to channel magic) but how many times must the Aes Sedai save all of their lives before they finally earn Rand and his friends' trust and respect? I sorta get it, as the Aes Sedai do have mysterious ways and means by which they go about getting what they want, but still, they did save Rand and his friends multiple times. I see that a common complaint about Jordan's writing style is his extremely detailed descriptions of what various characters are wearing and what they look like, but I rather enjoy it as it paints a beautiful picture for me to see. There is such a great sense of adventure in this story, and if you think that Hogwarts is interesting, you'll absolutely love the Aes Sedai training grounds in the white tower of Tar Valon. It's easy to see why this series was an international best seller. If you're looking for an engrossing story that you can really immerse yourself in to escape the worries of everyday life, you need look no further. This vast tale is of the sort by which all fantasy will be compared and contrasted to, and it makes for an excellent standard.

Everything I expected

All the books are here, even came a little early!

Keep in mind these books are short and fat, that might be a turn off for some people as they can get a little awkward to hold.

Other than that, they're great! even have that new book smell!

A fantasy epic at a crazy bargain price

I highly recommend this series to any fantasy lover. It's well written, intricate, unpredictable, and borrows lightly from Tolkien for the nice fantasy feeling without being even close to a LOTR clone. I would recommend getting the first book or two from a local library to make sure you like the series before buying the whole lot, but this bundle is an absolutely insane deal. I bought it for I believe $96, and I was thrilled with the price then, and I can't believe that the price has gone down almost $20 since then. As long as the price for the collection stays below about $125, this is an absolute steal.
