An excellent fast paced introductory guide to Apache ActiveMQ
By salim mc gann
The Instant How-to features a list of common messaging operations and demonstrates how these operations can be implemented using ActiveMQ. Each How-to is thoroughly explained and the corresponding source codes are terse and well constructed.

The author uses a consistent layout to demostrate all How-to in the book. Each How-to Maven POM file is provided by the author. This consistent layout helps you to focus on the ActiveMQ applications without extending yourself trying to understand all the auxillary compoments needed to execute the applications.

How-to 1. Installing ActiveMQ
How-to 2. Setting up your development environment

How-to 1 & 2 explains how to setup a typical ActiveMQ environment. There are 3 software needed to get started: ActiveMQ, Java and Maven.
To test the examples presented in this Instant How-to I used a Centos 6.4 VMWare virtual machine. I'd downloaded the ActiveMQ, Java and Maven softwares and then uncompressed the binaries (no installation required) and configured my profile to point to the software locations. The setup and configuration was simple and painless.

All examples are deployed using Maven. A detailed understanding of Maven is not required to test any of the examples presented in the Instant How-to. I tested the source codes which I had downloaded from the publisher's site and there were no issues while executing the applications. Each of the examples I tested were compiled and executed using mostly a single command (mvn compile exec:java).

How-to 3. Creating ActiveMQ applications
In this How-to the author creates the first ActiveMQ application. The How-to shows you how to create a queue, a MessageProducer and a MessageConsumer. In the application a message is placed on a queue by the MessageProducer and removed from the queue by the MessageConsumer.

How-to 4. Dividing up work with queues
In this How-to jobs are placed on a queue and subsequently the jobs in the queue can be consumed by more than one consumers. However, each job in the application can only be consumed by one MessageConsumer. To allow for multiple consumers to remove jobs from the queue without locking the application an asynchorous MessageListener Object is used to process a job.

How-to 5. Event processing with topics
How-to 6. Selecting messages

How to 5 & 6 Introduces publish-subscribe messaging. In How-to 5 a publisher sends a message to a topic and the JMS provider dispatches the message to the subscriber of the topic. How-to 6 modifies the application developed in How-to 5 to filter the the messages the subscriber receives using JMS selectors.

How-to 7. Using the JMS request/response pattern
In this How-to the requestor MessageProducer sends a request message to the responder queue; the responder MessageConsumer receives the request; the responder MessageConsumer returns a reply to the requestor queue; and the requestor MessageProducer receives the reply

How-to 8. Scheduling message delivery.
Shows how to schedule a message for delivery. Also the author gives examples of how to browse and remove scheduled messages.

How-to 9. Activity monitoring in ActiveMQ
The sample application listens for events being added to and removed from a destination by the MessageProducer and MessageConsumser. The application outputs counts of the MessageProducer and MessageConsumer for the monitored destination by querying the consumerCount and producerConsumer properties from an advisory message.

How-to 10. Application testing using embedded brokers
How-to explains how to embed an broker inside of a messaging application. The messaging application is a rehash of How-to 3 with an embedded broker.

How-to 11. Using ActiveMQ connection pools
Shows an embedded broker inside of a messaging application performing a basic performance test using Pooled and non-Pooled connections. I had to reduce the number connections and number of threads opened to complete the performance test in my Centos VM. The How-to shows the reduction in execution time an application can gain by having a pool of open connections.

How-to 12. Using Virtual Destinations
Messages are sent to a topic (non-durable) by a JMS producer. The messages are then passed to a virtual destination queue (durable) where the messages can be consumed by one or more JMS Consumers. Virtual Destination benefits are load balancing and message persistence.

How-to 13. Using Failover transport
The How-to implements the ActiveMQ Failover Transport in a sample application. ActiveMQ Failover Transport automatically reconnects a client to a broker when there is connection failure and the broker is brought back online.

Java mastery is not required to test the examples listed in the Instant How-to. The reader will need further reading to get a fuller understanding of ActiveMQ and how to integrate ActiveMQ into a non Java application stack. At the end of each How-to the author provides the additional resources that can be found at Apache ActiveMQ home site.

Ideal for newbie to ActiveMQ with limited time
By Christian Posta
If you're interested in using ActiveMQ, but don't have the time to distill the wiki, blogs, and online tutorials (some outdated?), then this book is highly recommended. You won't become an expert after reading this, but you will have more than enough understanding about how things work, why they work, and where to go get additional information. The good thing is, with only 70ish pages, you won't be side tracked with fluff and filler material. It's all 'to-the-point' and step by step. Basic things like connecting to the broker, using the correct connection settings, producing/consuming from the broker, and even making use of some advanced features like Virtual Topics. The author also does a good job of describing why things work they way they do, and what alternative settings would do differently.

Cut right into the chase
By Alaa A. Abed
I had the opportunity to receive a copy of this book for review. Frankly I had doubts first about the whole INSTANT series from packt publishing since books are much shorter than any other technical book I am used to read and I wasn't sure if it will be sufficient to cover the whole topic. I was wrong and I guess one should never judge a book by its size too.

The pace of the material and examples are very well laid out starting from the basic hello world kind of example into a more advanced topics like load balancing, failover and some EIP implementations. I liked the fact that each topic have a very small example to highlight the classes and methods needed. Examples have one page class that cut right into the chase. If you are interested only in a single topic like for example the request-response pattern implementation you can skip right into the example provided and you can actually copy the code into your project and start building on top of it. I always hated those books where they start building a complex application incrementally and if you skip few chapters, example become useless or you have to decipher pages of code to figure out what methods you need to use.

Please notice that this is not a book that teach you about messaging concepts, patterns and all the theory behind MOM. You should be familiar with messaging and JMS in general, most probably used another product other than ActiveMQ and you would like to hit the ground running writing consumer or producer endpoints.

I liked the reference to Camel framework and other Apache projects related to integration in the further readings section. I think ActiveMQ, Camel, CXF, and ServiceMix are brilliant set of technologies that can handle any integration infrastructure.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning things by actually writing code and see how it works and would like to produce tangible results fast.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST-READ!!!!
By Jesus M. Medero
As an environmental engineer with a 25+ years actual practice, I have to say that this book is one of the best in the field. The book addresses almost (for not saying all) the environmental engineering field issues, adding the extremely-important environmental sustainability focus to our practice. "Old" principles (such as wastewater engineering and potable water treatment) are addressed, as well as the more-recent aspects. The focus of the book is practical; it does not enter into the "too-complex" issues that (in my opinion) do not help that much the actual practitioner. The book is excellent for both the environmental engineering student (the format is focused to the actual classroom, with exercises, problems, etc.), as well as for the experienced EE practitioners (which should acquire knowledge of the environmental sustainability field). Beasts and Gods: How Democracy Changed Its Meaning and Lost Its Purpose, by Roslyn Fuller

Democracy is sold to us on its ability to deliver equal opportunity, and to give every citizen an equal voice. Yet time and again we see that this is not the case: power and spoils alike flow to the few, while the many are left with no recourse. What is wrong with democracy?

Nothing, says Roslyn Fuller: what we have simply isn’t democracy—it’s a perversion of it, created by poorly designed electoral systems, weak campaign laws, and broad limitations on participation and representation at nearly every level. Backing her argument with copious empirical data analyzing a wide variety of voting methods across twenty nations, Fuller makes her conclusion irrefutable: if we want true democracy, we have to return to the philosophical insights that originally underpinned it, and thoroughly reexamine the goals and methods of democracy and democratic participation. A radical, damning, yet at the same time fiercely hopeful work, Beasts and Gods aims to reconfigure the very foundations of modern society.

Review
“Beast and Gods is a timely and provocative look behind the cliches of western politics. It recognises that government of the people, by the people, is not what our current democracies feel like to most of their citizens. Fuller returns to the roots of democracy in classical republican practice and rediscovers the sources of the renewal that is urgently required. Her optimism makes this not just a challenging book but a heartening one.”
(Irish Times)

“Beasts and Gods provides a fascinating contrast between democracy in theory and democracy in practice. It deconstructs the assumptions underlying representative democracy, and debunks the fiction that modern elections are “free and fair.” This provocative book draws on lessons from ancient Greece, while advocating direct democracy by decoupling economics from politics.”
(Marjorie Cohn, Thomas Jefferson School of Law)

"Every now and then modern society throws up someone who questions its most cherished myths. The how and why of it deserves a book in its own right. Fuller is one such, and in this work she takes on a holy cow, democracy, that  the West loves to believe  it invented (like all good things). She is a young scholar, but gifted with the right intuition, attitude,  and talent to take it on, full frontal,  from A to Z . As such the book is a refreshing and highly timely, tour de force, putting both conventional apologetics and hoary critiques to shame. It dares us to rethink the myth, and perhaps even to, finally, infuse some  real content to it - before we are all entrapped in an irreversible oligarchy." (Rajani Kanth, Harvard University)

“A visionary thought experiment . . . guaranteed to make you think differently about the trillion dollar bureaucracies we call democracy today.”
  (Forbes)

Good starting point for thinking about what's wrong with our current "democracies"
By A. J. Sutter
This is an excellent piece of polemical writing. The author (RF) makes a good case that what we call “democracy” is very, very far from meeting the ideals that we’re taught are embodied in that word. Far from being a book about the problems of democracy, it instead contends that we call “democracy” isn’t that at all. RF is less convincing about her proposed solution for turning our present system into true democracy. But that doesn’t invalidate the critique that makes up the bulk of her book.

Although written before the 2016 US Presidential election or the Brexit vote, the book gives a coherent explanation of why the outcomes of elections don’t reflect the will of most members of a polity. Instead, the outcomes of elections tend to favor the interests of the wealthy — a fact recognized since at least the time of Aristotle (who is also the source, a bit out of context, for the book’s title).

What’s especially new in this book is that RF shows how this advantage operates not only at the national level, when she discusses various election systems, but also gets replicated at the levels of international trade diplomacy, the United Nations, international financial institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, and even the so-called “civil society” of NGOs. I’ve not seen an argument before that takes in so many levels and that is presented convincingly and entirely reasonably (other than the considerably more paranoid rantings about the Rockefellers and the Trilateral Commission for which I was often a captive audience when I rode the New York subways to work many years ago). RF puts her background in public international law to good use, and explains in a very clear and easy-to-understand voice the kinds of subtleties that are usually buried within specialist scholarship about trade, finance and political science. Before reading this book I, for one, had never given much thought to why countries are eager to get non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council: the answer, which seems obvious once one hears it, is to trade favors with the more powerful permanent members, usually in the form of money or investment in exchange for compliant votes. RF provides some illustrative cases to support her point here, as with the other topics she discusses. Of course the favors these less powerful countries ask for usually benefit the ruling elites in each.

RF also makes an interesting case for why our system has gone so wrong: because it deliberately copied certain institutions of the system of the Roman Republic, which became dominated by the wealthy even before it degenerated into an empire headed by absolute rulers. The Roman Republic inspired the US Founding Fathers and the French revolutionaries, among others, to rely on representative democracy rather than the direct sort. RF’s hostility to the republican idea is a bit counter to the thesis proposed by Niccolò Machiavelli in his Discourses on the First Ten Books of Livy, that the greatness of the Roman Republic lay in its having institutions that set the interests of the rich few and the poor multitude against each other in a constructive way (e.g. the Senate vs. the Tribune of the Plebs). Recent adaptations of this idea have included not only the civic republican movement based on the philosophy of Quentin Skinner, Phillip Pettit and Maurizio Viroli, but also the more radically confrontational notions suggested by John McCormick in his excellent Machiavellian Democracy (2011). RF doesn’t engage with Machiavelli or the recent reconsiderations of republicanism. On the other hand, maybe there was a good reason why Machiavelli limited his work to discussing the first 10 books of Livy’s history of Rome, Ab Urbe Condita, when the whole work runs to 142 books, including roughly 100 about the Republic: maybe even the Republic started to go off its rails not long after Book 10 ends, in 292 BCE.

Referenda aren’t RF’s recommended remedy: she shows they’re just as easily manipulated as elections by misleading advertising and campaigning. Rather, RF advocates a return to the deliberative direct democracy of ancient Athens. The method of doing this, she proposes, is the Internet: online assemblies where there would be deliberation open to all participants (as in the Athenian tradition of “isegoria”), immediately followed by voting. There are already online platforms for this purpose (RF mentions Loomio, Democracy OS and LiquidFeedback), and such systems have been in use in Estonia, New Zealand and elsewhere. Participants aren’t anonymous, but “clearly identifiable through online profiles” (@288), and PIN codes and ID cards could also be used for security. RF’s idea is that ultimately the system would have some speakers on camera, with everyone else providing running text commentary, “nothing more complicated than an engaging symbiosis of Skype and twitter Technology” (@289).

What’s more, RF proposes that participants be paid for this service, as members of assemblies were in Athens and as participants in the jury duty system are in many jurisdictions today. Even in ancient Athens, only a fraction of those eligible actually participated in votes. Still, her calculations give one pause: assuming that all 24 million registered voters in Canada participated once every 2 weeks in a 2- to 3-hour session and got paid $30, this would come out to a bit more than $18 billion per year. RF says that this roughly equals Canada’s defense budget, which it doesn’t really need anyway, and that fewer than all those voters are likely to participate each time (@320-321). On the other hand, in a country like the US, 24 million people is already only a fraction of the voting population, and while $18 billion is of course much smaller than the US defense budget, it’s still a substantial chunk of change.

Whether this sort of expenditure is deemed in the best interests of the nation is essentially a political issue, and it’s possible that a country could decide it’s worth it. So my own skepticism about RF’s Athenian solution isn’t based on this question of compensation. Rather it’s based on a few other issues that she doesn’t engage with adequately or in some cases at all: (i) hacking, (ii) access to the online forum, (iii) the role of slavery in the ancient Athenian economy, (iii) the role of public slaves in ancient Athenian government, and experts more generally, and (v) constitutions. Some brief comments on each follow.

(i) Hacking: As one expert on the “age of computer” has put it, “I’ll tell you what: no computer is safe.” Vulnerabilities of computerized voting include not only faking of voter credentials but manipulation of the results after voting by bona fide voters. The book doesn’t address these issues in any substantial way, nor does it talk about how the actual votes could be kept from being traceable to the persons who voted. That last isn’t trivial: it’s easy to imagine a system where those in power could track down and punish people for their votes.

(ii) Access: There are at least two distinct access issues that are pertinent: access to the Internet, and access to an audience. (1) In most countries Internet access isn’t free to all voters. Generally, you need to invest in some Internet-capable device, plus a subscription to a service provider. Even in public libraries, seats are limited. Some of the most vulnerable populations, such as the physically handicapped or elderly, may have mobility issues, so public libraries aren’t an option and expendable income may be tight. Unless there is some sort of minimum guaranteed access available to all voters, something like the Minitel system in France, voting will remain more available to the haves than to the have-nots. While RF does acknowledge that her proposal “is not a perfect solution” because “even in wealthy countries not everyone has access to high-speed internet” (@324), that’s the entirety of what she says about the issue. (2) The other access issue arises when millions are participating online in debate about an issue: who then decides on whom the camera falls, or even whose text feeds get presented to everyone? Would this be left to some algorithm, for example? And if so, who controls the algorithm? After discussing how online mechanisms are being used for “participatory budgeting” in cities like Paris (albeit for only 5% of the city’s investment budget, according to the article RF cites), Köln Germany, and Cambridge MA, RF says “the potential for scaling up participatory budgeting for national use is already obvious” (@284). Maybe, if the nation is like Ireland (pop. ca. 5 million) or even Sweden (pop. ca. 9.6 million), but quite a bit different if the national population is several dozens or hundreds of millions.

(iii) Slavery-based economy: RF mentions slavery only in the context of how Athenians were nicer to their slaves than most other Greeks, including “slave-protection” legislation (@327ff). What she doesn’t address, though is that Athens had the largest slave population among the Greek city-states, and this was an important factor in allowing citizens free time to participate both in wars and in civic affairs. Slaves ran much of the day-to-day economy. Now that we don’t have slaves, it’s hard to see how most working people would have adequate time to participate politically, or that those groups who do have time would be representative of the society at large. (E.g., if voting were dominated by retired and/or unemployed white males, what would America look like?) RF doesn’t address this issue. One might be tempted to speculate that robots, AI and other forms of automation will liberate most people from the drudgery of work, and allow them more time for civic participation. But in Athens, citizens owned slaves and kept the economic fruits of their labors; whereas today, it’s capitalists who own the bots. The benefits of automation won’t accrue to the voting population at large, absent something like a guaranteed minimum revenue — a topic way beyond the scope of the present book.

(iv) Slaves, experts and governing: A little-known feature of Athenian democracy was that slaves were a necessary element of government as well. RF makes a passing reference to “public slaves” as the subject of Athenian assembly deliberations (@40), but never touches on their real significance. Public slaves weren’t owned by any individual or family, but by the polity. In a society where citizens rotated through city offices at least annually, the public slaves were “public servants” both literally and in the sense we today speak of career bureaucrats: they provided continuity and knew how everything worked. Often they would stay in their jobs for years, and thereby amass tremendous power and sometimes wealth. They were the first experts. (At the same time, their status as slaves meant that, notwithstanding all RF’s attempts to downplay violence in Athenian slavery, they could receive punishment in their bodies, whereas freemen were liable only to fines or exile. For more on public slaves, see Paulin Ismard’s excellent « La démocratie contre les experts : Les esclaves publics en Grèce ancienne » (Seuil 2015).) RF generally takes a dim view of “experts” in this book, but the fact is that on issues of great complexity it will be difficult for sufficient numbers of citizens to become adequately informed on their own to make good judgments all the time, or even most of it. Who then chooses which experts to listen to? As the title of Ismard’s book suggests, there is a tension between democracy and expertise, but as the Athenians themselves found, it is difficult to have the former without the latter. I hope a future edition of this book will grapple with this very serious issue.

(v) Constitutions: RF discusses ancient Greek and Roman constitutions, as well as the drafting of the American one in the 18th Century. But even though modern constitutions seem to pose serious obstacles to the sorts of reforms she is advocating, they don’t get any attention in this book. In many countries, this is not so much of an issue if the what you’re seeking to change is the manner of holding elections, because the mechanics of elections are often governed by ordinary legislation or organic laws (important laws that may require supermajorities to pass or to be amended) that are of lesser status than the constitution per se. But if the issue is whether to have elections at all, or how to organize the other organs of government, then constitutional change will be needed. You then run into a chicken-and-egg problem about how to effect those amendments. The book’s presumption is that parliamentarians are the tools of the wealthy elites, but since most constitutional amendments start in national parliaments: will they or their patrons be so willing to surrender their power?

As mentioned at the beginning of this review, though, any shakiness in RF’s proposed solution doesn’t mean that she’s also wrong about the problem she’s identified. Rather it means we just have to keep working to find creative approaches to the problem.

The book has neither footnotes/endnotes nor a conventional list of references. Instead, there is something like a bibliographical essay at the end, which lists key references for each main topic discussed within each chapter. While I’d have preferred more detailed annotation and a traditional reference list, the book’s system was adequate for at least a few things I was curious about. Overall, despite my not being convinced by RF’s prescription, I think her diagnosis is right and the whole is presented with outstanding clarity, so I give it five stars. This would also be a good book for discussion groups and undergraduate teaching, especially if presented with some differing points of view.

Do you have "Arcade Fever"?
By Ashley Knowles
I went into this book thinking to myself "it's just a coffee table book with some fun facts in it" but after reading it I found it to be full of fond memories of my video game induced youth.

The book does contain some fun facts that I found to be enjoyable and made me relive my memories past. This book is in color and highlights some of the games that I remember spending my entire allowance on [Burgertime, Tapper, and Donkey Kong Junior].

Just about any arcade game that that was a part of your life from the 80's is mentioned in here, and if you are into video games you will find yourself reading more and more to find out more about the other video games that you might have missed while you were too busy pumping quarters in your local Pac-Man machine.

This book is not really in depth as I would have liked it to be, but it is definitely worthy of a good read and a great way to kill some time.

My only complaint is that I wish that Mr. Sellers had included some more of those great 80's games that stole my quarters [Bump n' Jump and Night Driver were not featured while games like Death Race I and II and Chiller only got mentioned solely for their violent content and controversy].

Other than that, if you loved to spend your time at the arcade, whether you were a child, teen, or adult, Mr. Sellers book is worth the price for the memories alone.

Interesting Reading
By Donald H. Moore
I almost didn't buy it after reading some of the reviews, and after reading the book, I didn't see the problems others had with it. It is peppered with nice tidbits, some interviews (which were very short, and didn't get boring), and a timeline that ran across the bottom of the pages which gave you a relationship between what was happening in the world at that time, and the release of the game.
I found the author's writing style enjoyable. He didn't just say 'this is pac-man, released in 1981.' He wrote about the pac-man fever hitting the nation, about the highest score possible, and who has it, all good filler information.
I would say this is a good, interesting book that most will find enjoyable to read.

From the Inside Flap
Hedge funds, and their strategies, have gained significant recognition for their flexible and aggressive nature towards the markets. But as hedge funds have become more mainstream, the strategies associated with them—such as merger arbitrage, fixed income arbitrage, and convertible arbitrage—have become less capable of generating the returns you'd expect for the risk taken.

To deal with this situation, hedge funds and other savvy investors have found new ways to make it in today's dynamic financial environment. Actively lending money to companies and individuals that banks won't or can't touch; finding arbitrage situations that larger mutual funds are unable to dip into because of size or regulatory constraints; and putting dollars into companies where activism may extract more value from investments are only a few of the ways hedge funds and sophisticated investors are turning cash into supercash in today's tough markets.

Now, in SuperCa$h: The New Hedge Fund Capitalism, hedge fund manager James Altucher examines the many new types of investments that have been developed over the past few years by top hedge funds and investors around the world. Through detailed examples and up-to-the-minute advice, Altucher reveals how you can take advantage of these investments and offers a dozen strategies that can be used to supersize your returns. Some of the topics discussed include:

  • How the PIPE (private investments in public equities) mechanism can provide consistent returns in both bull and bear markets
  • A new crop of IPOs—SPAC (the specialty acquisitions corporation), Dutch Auctions, and reverse mergers
  • Understanding and implementing a closed-end fund arbitrage strategy
  • Shortselling methods that have withstood the test of time
  • Art as an alternative asset class that is rela tively uncorrelated to the global markets
  • And much more

Along the way, Altucher also talks about what to watch out for when investing directly in a hedge fund and offers candid advice for those thinking about starting their own hedge fund.

Turning cash into supercash is not just a style of investing, but a way of life. Striving to maximize the value of your dollars requires nonstop research, patience, courage, and fortitude. Going down the supercash path may be challenging, but the rewards are well worth it.

A book on uncommon investment ideas, not how super hedge funds profit
By ServantofGod
Instead of discussing how super hedge funds like those operated by Buffet, Soros, Tudor profit big, it is dedicated to uncommon means/stratgies (I cant agree with the author that 1) the ideas were new, 2) his adoption of the term hedge fund to simply all funds covered) including PIPE (private investment in public equities, reverse merger, IPOs - SPAC (the speciality acquisitions corp), Dutch (IPO) Auctions, closed end fund arbritrage, following Billionaires' micro-cap portfolio, activism, stocks just kicked out from indexes for "seasonal" factors, coins, paintings, NY taxi medallions and even delinquent credit card debt etc etc. Okay as a supplementary reading for ideas, but definitely not to be taken as a main course. For those who wanna read to learn more on hedge fund, "Hedgehogging" by Barton Biggs (2006) is a much suitable choice.

For those who have not read the author's first book "Trade like a Hedge Fund: 20 Successful Uncorrelated Strategies & Techniques to Winning Profits" yet, I strongly recommend you to read that first. Your liking of that is a strong indicator of your preference to this. In case you dislike that one, please give this a pass.

Excellent information
By Mariusz Skonieczny
Wow, this is a really good book about learning what other market participants, such as hedge funds, are doing and where they are investing their money. As more hedge funds are created, the opportunities to invest in many areas are shrinking, so they have to find other ways to generate returns. This illustrates some of their new methods. For example, when banks are refusing to lend to some individuals and businesses, some hedge funds are stepping in to fill in the gap. Another example is PIPEs (Private Investments in Public Equities) where public companies, instead going through investment banking firms to raise more capital, simply go straight to hedge funds to negotiate terms, and as a result, close transactions much more quickly.

I absolutely loved this book. Even though I will not be using most of the techniques in the book, I still found it extremely educational. James Altucher is superb. I like most of his books. I would also recommend The Forever Portfolio.

Timely Info!!
By Kevin Kingston
It never fails, I go on vacation it hits the fan.( I'm writing this on July 28th 2007 after the DJIA was down 4.2% the previous week and the Russell 2000 dropped 4.9%.) Every single time. Well in chaos there is opportunity. Coincidentally as the markets melting down I'm reading "Super Cash" by James Altucher and I should share his QQQQ Crash Revisited chapter; its revisited from his previous book, "Trade Like a Hedge Fund". In short it states that most of the time, in fact all the time from his sample timeframe of June 2003 - April 15th 2005 when the Q's drop over 1.5 standard deviations below the 10 day moving average (if you don't get that - it happened last week) it bounces - 55 of the last 55 times (at least short term.) This is an over simplification but it basically says to "buy the panic"

If you take the NASDAQ 100 stock from Jan 1 1999 to Dec 31 2004 their were 3715 instances of this occurring (stocks dropping 1.5 standard deviations below their 10 day moving average) and if you bought them on the next morning and held until they were profitable or 20 days - whichever happened first, you would have made money on 3,518 of them or 94.7% turning $1 million into about $9 million if you traded all of them and used 5% of the equity on each trade.
The book is good and I recommend it! It helps you learn to go against the crowd.
