Gibson's first novel, Neuromancer, was greeted with hosannas and showered with awards. This second book, set in the same universe, again offers a faddish, glitzy surface not unlike that of Miami Vice. Gibson's central image is the shadow boxes constructed by the artist Joseph Cornell, collections of seemingly unrelated objects whose juxtaposition creates a new impression. In the same fashion, the novel has three protagonists, each of whom is putting together jigsaw clues in pursuit of his separate goal. The corporate headhunter, the art dealer and the computer hacker all find themselves being manipulatedjust as the author contrives to have their paths converge. This book is less appealing and less verbally skillful than Gibson's first novel, dense and dour as that was, but readers who liked that one will want to see this as well.

Kindle edition is typically worthless trash & ruins the story, buy an actual book instead

As per usual, half the punctuation is missing because of crappy OCR, but even worse, every single one of the full line breaks which indicate a scene change are systematically removed. So you read a line of dialogue and then the very next line is being said hours later, or in a different frame of reference, etc., and doesn't make sense until you think about it a minute and realize that there used to be a visual indication of the frame shift which has been removed because Amazon churns out shoddy product and charges full price for it.

Really cool at Zero degrees...

Great book, three great story lines that "kind of" merge in one all too short denouement that may leave some readers panting for more and more! Gibson had little space to cram his ending into, but he managed it adequately. Overall, a really fun book to read; really looking forward to Mona Lisa Overdrive to complete the trilogy, and then it's on to the other series and novels.

Fun, in a grim sort of way

Gibson takes this book and experiments.
Three story lines unfold across the pages.
Each character sees things differently, and you can see the differences. Is Conroy a simple agent with his thatch of white hair, or a dude with the meanest mouth you ever saw? Both.
Does this book wander off into some seriously weird voodoo? You bet.
Is it still stylish in that 80s noir sort of way, with yuppies expanding to the ultimate form, Japanese ruling over all with mega-corporations, and the poor just plain poor. You bet.
There's even hot cyberdecks, drugs and rogue biotechnology, for the cyberpunk purist.
The later exercises of Gibson take the same form, and repeat to triteness. This book, being an experiment, is still fresh and interesting.
If it blows you away, keep reading Gibson. If it's not exactly thrilling, there are many other authors to sample. But give it a read and see what you think. The time will be well spent.

This book is garbage

Nothing personal, for those who give more than 2 stars for this book, you are either a friend of the author, got the book for free, or never really review it throroughly. Here are the reason why:
1. Nothing is new in this book that you can get it off the web
2. Equations were given without fully specify its component
3. You can't work the problem in the back of the chapter because there are no materials in the chapter to support it. You need your old engineering book in order to solve these problems
4. Problems were stated unclear and incorrect. For example, he ask to calculate an N-channel MOSFET transistor problem, but the figure he used is a P-channel. It seems like the author either pull these problems out of this behind or took these problems from other engineering books and change some values to make it different, but unfortunately, those values were unworkable.
5. Pretty thick book for a lot of garbage. If I need to work electrical or heat transfer problems, I'll go to my old engineering book at least those authors know their materials.

"Fundamentals of Microsystems Packaging" is an informative, well-written textbook, the first to cover this rapidly-evolving technology. Professor Tummala's latest book should appeal to only three groups: those who know a lot about microsystems packaging, those who know something about it, and those who know nothing about it.
Microsystems packaging specialists, who typically focus on one sub-specialty, will find this detailed exposition of the entire field broadening. Non-specialists with some general packaging knowledge will find here all that they need to fully understand and work with the key elements of microsystems packaging. Novices, students, and those in related technical fields will find a well-structured introduction that prepares them to deal with microsystems packaging.
This comprehensive textbook offers to all of the above groups a firm grounding in the diverse disciplines comprising microsystems packaging. Nineteen of the chapters share the title, "Fundamentals of ...". "Fundamental" means "a foundation," and that is what these chapters provide, covering the key elements of topics ranging from semiconductors to systems, including design, processing, materials, manufacture, testing, performance, reliability, thermal management, and environmental considerations.
For the specialist, who must build upon these foundations, each chapter includes a judicious selection of recommended further readings. For the autodidact, the scholar, or the flagellant, there are even homework problems to test your knowledge. Four chapters, covering optoelectronics, MEMS, RF packaging, and wafer-level packaging, lead the venturesome to the borders of today's knowledge, where they might glimpse the promised land, or just gape at the dark forests of ignorance.
Although the text is the child of fifty authors, the logical flow and smooth editing make it a unified work that speaks with one clear voice. Despite their diversity, the 2:1 ratio of academic to practitioner authors makes a good balance of technical rigor and practical experience. Talented illustrators provided a wealth of informative two-color pictures, charts, pictures, and diagrams.
In summary, despite my forty years in microelectronics research, engineering, management, and consulting, I learned new things every time I opened this book.

Very detailed, maybe too detailed

Good book in that it is very detailed, but it is probably too detailed for most people's requirements. You could probably save some money and find whatever specific information you need on the Internet; however, if you want a very detailed reference book close by this book may be for you.

Feeling blessed that this book was written

This book is absolutely wonderful! I have two children that suffer greatly from anxiety and one is already starting the book. I read it first so I could help them with the same advice and understand the process. It's a very quick read but hits the points home so well that you finish it with a bit of shock of all the clarity that just popped out. I simply can not wait for my children to finish it. I will also save it for one of my younger children who has Aspergers for the appropriate time for him to read it. Thank you so much for this book!!

My daughter doesn't really like to read however, she got through this book quickly! It's written very well for teenagers and gets straight to the point on how to deal with anxiety. It helped my teen daughter a lot. She was able to deal with her anxiety a lot better after reading this. I highly recommend it.

What a comprehensive collection of pop up books and paper engineers from our wonderful order of dimensional book lovers. I think it is just great that these books are being purchased by libraries. Years ago I traveled to the 4 corners of our state of New Mexico to teach workshops to librarians who hosted an incredible after school program for children and teachers. Teaching 3D design and acquainting everyone at how easy it is to incorporate moveable books into all programming was so much fun for everyone and the samples that came out of the courses was amazing. This book provides an excellent methodical walkthrough for those that want to write client-server programs using C++ and the Boost library. Both have a steep learning curve, yet this book introduces the building blocks and iteratively builds functioning components in a way that is logical and easy to understand and implement immediately.

I really enjoyed reading and learning from this book and highly recommend it.

p.s. my only comment is that I would have liked the book to have a section about testing the networking implementations using the Boost's support for unit and integration testing. Maybe for the second edition :)

Great Cookbook for Boost Asio C++ Network Programming

The Boost library is really well laid out and really great for starting up a project quickly, however it takes time to get used to it and learn the ins and outs. I highly recommend this cookbook once you get your feet wet with networked communications between clients and servers. This cookbook delivers and the author knows the library rather well, and the best part is the code from the book works! Highly recommend this book.

Non-obvious, powerful laws for success

Fascinating and powerful book that shows how success is never simply down to your intrinsic talents or worth, but whether you are able to use the power of `hubs' and `networks' to achieve your aims.

The hubs that we choose to get involved with (for example, the company that we work for) are crucial for our success. Join a fast rising firm in a growing industry, and it will be difficult not to do very well.

Smart people choose jobs, activities or places to live that will expose them to a wide range of people and ideas, because they know that one of these `weak links' can be the source of their own defining idea or enterprise. Once upon a time we lived in villages where we knew perhaps 100-200 people. This small world limited our opportunities in every way, whereas today our lives are richer because we are exposed to people and ideas from everywhere.

The book is full of great tips on business strategy, as you would expect from Koch. One of the surprising things he notes is that online business is more monopolistic and concentrated than regular commerce. In search engines, for instance, there is really only Google, in online communities there is now really only Facebook. Thus the creation of such hubs, with their vast promise of wealth and influence, is the obvious goal of the entrepreneur. In such ways we can use network effects to our own advantage - but if we are not aware of network and hub theory in the first place, we are flying blind.

Many of the ideas Koch talks introduces us to are counter-intuitive, but once we own them we have a tremendous advantage.

A great push towards a major opening up of your life

Richard Koch, famous for the marketing of the 80/20 principle, initially identified by V.Paretro, now, together with Greg Lockwood, exploits and diffuses Granovetter's ideology of "The Strength of Weak Ties", the famous paper that initiated a whole new chapter of social science ideology. In this very nice and easily readable book, Granovetter's principle of the sociological importance in the modern connected world of weak ties, is integrated to a new way of considering society as a network of spokes and hubs. Actually, the extreme originality of this work, because, original it is, resides in the combination of a well accepted idea with the ongoing evolution of communication technology.
The book is structured in thirteen chapters that address many already known and discussed issues such as the concept of the Small World, the existence of Superconnectors (individuals that have the capacity of making many weak ties and utilizing them to raise interpersonal relationships), Hubs and their meaning at individual and societal level, the importance and real meaning of Cyberspace, the detailed description of the importance of Networks in society, how Business relates to all these issues, and how Business has contributed to build sociological principles that may apply to our singular existences. A last chapter is dedicated on how networks and superconnectors can actually act in reducing poverty both in first world and third world realities. Each chapter has a summary of the state of the art of the issue and is followed by a number of interviews and personal experiences of various active members of society, which make the reading very vital and stimulating.
Basically the concept goes that weak ties work better for expansion of job opportunities and the evolution of society than strong ties, which often limit and trap initiatives and creative thinking. But as a corollary to this initial concept, the authors also explore the importance of Hubs in the diffusion of ideas. An enlightening historical example is that of Paul (for Christ) and Lenin (for Marx) as creators of hubs that actually did the marketing of the ideas invented by the predecessors.
This book is conceived in the context of business world, however it can be useful for anyone at every level. It incredibly gives a push towards a major opening up of mentality and social behavior and positively affects the way we think.

This is a jewel of a book, and goes very well with Richard Koch's practical masterpiece, "The 80/20 Principle". I have applied the precepts of increasing my "hubs" or contact groups and have seen powerful and happy results in less than 3 weeks! In this book Scott convincingly argues that managerial control of corporations has never been the norm. Capitalists and their representatives—usually a mix of banks and other financial institutions—exercise powerful constraints on corporate policy. The exact nature and severity of these constraints varies over time, from place to place, and from corporation to corporation. But, in general, if they want to keep their jobs, corporate managers must internalize the values and priorities of financial capitalists, and work toward a long-run strategy of high profitability. In fact, Scott argues in the last chapter that corporate executives should be considered as part of the capitalist class.

The characterization of corporate control provided by Scott is also much more subtle and interesting than the bank control theories developed by some Marxists. In the United States, where the most mature form of corporate control seems to exist, power relations are described by Scott as a form of “polyarchic financial hegemony.” Financial institutions, wealthy capitalist families, and corporate executives hold power together, with financial institutions taking a leadership role. Importantly (and in contrast to theories of bank control), decision-making power over corporations is in the hands of a large and complex network of individuals and institutions, rather than an oligarchic group of banks with disjoint spheres of influence. The American “polyarchic” mode of corporate control is not universal—some societies do have somewhat more oligarchic systems—and the prevalent mode of control in a given country seems to be mostly determined by the country’s stage of economic development, and the country’s position in the world economy. But, it looks like the mode of control that exists in the US is gradually becoming more common in the rest of the world.

The one major drawback of the book is that it was published almost twenty years ago. So, the book does not cover the explosion of recent research on shareholder value orientation and its macroeconomic effects. I would be interested to know Scott’s perspective on that literature.
