Don't listen to the negative reviews!

I was hesitant to purchase How to Raise the Perfect Dog after reading the reviews that said the book was mostly old stories from Mexico, lacked specifics, and relied on lessons from older dogs in the pack. After reading the entire book, it was clear that the people who wrote those negative reviews hadn't really read the book. There were a couple of stories about Cesar's time growing up in Mexico and Cesar does point out how older dogs teach puppies in their pack, but everything was in the context of how anyone can apply these experiences and principles. I found plenty of specific guidelines and tips, which I am using now. I also read the New Skete Monks' book and found the two books to be complementary. Thanks to these two enjoyable and informative books, our 4 month old pup is well on his way to being a perfect dog!

Invaluable insights into the mind of a dog

I'm reading this along with "The Art of Raising a Puppy"-- they're booth good, for different reasons. I love Cesar's approach (which can be used in concert with the other book), although I believe it's mostly innate for him and he's not always best at concisely verbalizing/relating those traits to other humans.

Like his TV Shows, his book is informal and he rambles a bit-- the book would benefit from a ghost writer or editor.
That said, the messages he has to offer are golden and worth the read.

In comparison to "The Art of Raising a Puppy," in "How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood.." Cesar does a better job discussing the dog mind and psyche. The former does a better job objectively laying out schedules and charts and step-by-step how to choose and train a puppy.

So read Cesar's book for understanding the dogs mind and read "The Art..." for a step-by-step guide.

I Highly recommend this book!

Even though I was a Vet Tech for many years & worked for the dog trainer who trained the dog that was in the movie "Annie" years ago, I still learn new things from Cesar EVERY time I hear or read about his way of interacting with dogs. I've raised a lot of puppies, both personally, as well as in a rescue capacity. But I KNEW Cesar would have some great tips for raising a happy, well-adjusted pup, that I didn't already know. And he sure did! But I HIGHLY advise that you smart reading this book BEFORE you bring your new pup home. If that's not possible, then read it as quickly as possible because puppies grow & learn much faster than humans do. That also means they can learn some bad habits very quickly! It's OUR responsibility to make sure to give the little guy the best possible scenario to grow up in!

Don M. Chance, Ph.D., CFA, holds the James C. Flores Endowed Chair of MBA Studies and is Professor of Finance at the E.J. Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University. He previously held the William H. Wright, Jr. Endowed Chair for Financial Services at LSU, and the First Union Professorship in Financial Risk Management at Virginia Tech. Prior to his academic career, he worked for a large southeastern bank. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of Adelaide (Australia), the University of Strathclyde (Scotland), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Korea Advanced Institute for Science and Technology, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Dr. Chance is widely published in derivatives and risk management, as well as other areas of finance. He has published numerous articles in academic and practitioner journals and is the author of ESSAYS IN DERIVATIVES: RISK TRANSFER TOOLS AND TOPICS MADE EASY, 2e, and ANALYSIS OF DERIVATIVES FOR THE CFA PROGRAM. Understanding Option Theories

This is a wonderful book to have on your shelf for any finance major looking for an understanding of options, futures, and other types of contracts sold in the OTC and exchange markets. The text is fairly easy to follow and provides good examples to help students understand the theories behind option and future markets.
However, I do not feel that this book is for just anyone. Without some financial background I think that this book can be difficult to follow. It is hard to understand the mathmatics behind the theories presented in the text. The diskette is also somewhat disappointing as an aid for understanding the material. The disk only gives Excel generated financial models that you find in the book such as the Black-Shcoles pricing model.
With a good professor, this is a wonderful aid in constructing a foundation for option investing and pricing. And even giving some of its downfalls I would still recommend buying this book.

Well Written

I have read some really crappy finance books in my day, but when I cracked this one open I quickly grew fond of it. The authors do a good job explaining everything clearly, and provide good examples. Most importantly, they clearly show what all the notations mean for the formulas. Some of the notations seem a little ridiculous at first, but after you familiarize yourself it's all pretty easy.

The authors also do a good job explaining the Black-Scholes-Merton model, which is difficult to do.

If you are a student just taken up a course in derivatives or risk management you should have this book. if you find john hull more technical, you have Don Chance who covers options and other derivatives in a greater detail and in more words. everything you want to know about how banks etc have risk mangaement systems in place and market risk instruments is here.

Unfortunately, the teaching of water quality is not well organized. In most colleges and universities, water quality instruction is given in certain engineering curricula and in aquatic ecology or fisheries curricula. There also is brief attention to selected topics on water quality in numerous classes in other curricula. Water quality training in engineering is highly specialized and directed by necessity towards water supply and water treatment, while the focus in aquatic ecology and fisheries is on biological water quality and pollution. Few students venture into specialized classes outside of their curricula, and as a result, their formal training in water quality is greatly restricted. Self-education by reading texts and reference books on water quality is difficult. Authors of water quality books seem to be more interested in presenting a rigorous, detailed treatment than in focusing on simplicity and clarity. Chemical aspects of water quality often are presented at a level requiring fairly advanced mathematics and physical chemistry, and biological discussions may be quite advanced and theoretical. I have taught water quality to seniors and graduate students in agriculture, wildlife and fisheries, environmental sciences, economics, and similar disciplines for many years.

Caveat emptor

I respect Robert Bosnak's work with dreams and found Embodiment to be worthwhile, but felt resentment at having paid $90 for 142 pages of text--with no color plates or handmade endpapers that might justify the high cost. Before posting a comment, I emailed the publisher and learned that the $90 version is aimed at libraries. The editorial assistant said that there is a paperback version for $28.95, but I don't see it on Amazon.

A review stated this was not an introductory text. I think that's redundant and misleading. If one is a student of psychology, psychotherapy, drama theory, sociology, archeology, or a well read citizen of antiquity and it's legacy, this is a compelling read. This is a well written book and it conveys something crucial about humans that has been largely ignored: learning by mimesis/mimicry; as well as the 'phenomenological encounter' or immersion in an-other...an experience where subject and object are blurred in a sort of possession/trance. We learn how this primal method is actually present in many forms of art, therapy, and life. Further, we read how this capacity leads to a more sophisticated method of operating in the creative/therapeutic arts. Far from being esoteric, this experience is presented with clear explanation and examples from the author's work.

If you've come to this text for some reason, I wouldn't pass it up. Hopefully you can find it for a reasonable price...It's a true bummer it seems to be out of print.

Who do you feel in your own body?

Robert Bosnak combines his experiences from all over the world. His approach of dreams, active imagination and embodiment is interesting. He also weaves in the relevant literature - Jung, James LeDoux, Damasio. For me, the book was clear, but I and the others of my reading group had problems finding what it is about. His main issues are 'hidden' in the anecdotes and extensive anecdotes. It may be of interest when you're need some new angles on experiencing dreams and imagination. Not a beginners manual.

In Book "Kodaikanal: Vanishing Heritage of an Island in the Sky" written by natural heritage conservators and environmentalists Pradeep Chakravarthy, Anil Choudhry, Jayashree Kumar and Girija Viraraghavan, authors narrate the fascinating stories of natural grandeur as well as pristine natural heritage of the Palni Hills located in Western Ghat mountain range in India. Authors of this book are volunteers with the Kodaikanal Chapter of INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage). Thus, this book presents findings from INTACH’s ethnographical research projects carried out in the last few decades. I was a student at Presentation Convent back in the 50ies and I thought the place was beautiful, it brings back many memories of walks around the lake, Bear Shola, Silver Cascade and shopping, I also climbed Perumal Peak!! A remarkable intensive course on mechanics

Since there are some very good textbooks around in Mechanics, see, for instance, Kibble & Berkshire [1] or Scheck [2], I usually don't look too carefully into new textbooks on mechanics. However, the "Intensive Course" of Masud Chaichian and his colleagues Ioan Merches and Anca Tureanu is something particular.

Considering how skillfully the material is presented and how many useful exercises are provided, it is clear that this course is based on a broad teaching experience of the three authors. The traditional material on Newtonian and analytical mechanics is presented in a refreshingly direct way with explanatory examples and some nice historical material not taught conventionally. The Lagrangian formalism for discrete systems touches also the analogy between mechanical and electrical systems, the rigid body dynamics contains a very instructive discussion of gyroscopes and on the Larmor theorem.

The Hamiltonian formalism is worked out in quite some detail, including, for instance, a nice discussion of the Poisson and the Lagrange brackets and the relation to the corresponding commutators. Here the terrain is prepared in a rather direct and instructive way for applications to quantum mechanics.

In the concluding chapter, on about hundred pages, a course on the mechanics of continuous media is provided, a field that is becoming increasingly more important also in the development of modern physics and astrophysics. The three authors recognized this development an gave their students a rather complete introduction into this field. I wished I had learned as a student mechanics following this book. It has the great merit that also continuum mechanics is treated, including the Navier-Stokes equation. I only regret the absence of of a discussion on asymmetric stress tensors.

In some addenda, the three authors even give their students some hints into post-classical applications of mechanics. Moreover, on overview over tensor algebra and analysis is provided.

A really "Intensive Course" on Mechanics that I can strongly recommend to undergraduate and graduate students of physics and relating subjects and to their corresponding teachers.

Based on VERY OLD research

Ideas on Byzantine clothing have altered dramatically since this text was written. If you are looking to create an authentic type of garment for yourself, stay away from this book.

The book is very nice. It is a scholarly source to be taken seriously, and at the same time its language and format are comprehensible for an average reader who is not very familiar with the subject.

Continbuity in costume

This is a fine book on Greco-Roman costume. The author is particularly good on Roman, Late Roman, and Byzantine cloths. Of greatest interest is the discussion of Eastern Orthodox vestments and their relation to Byzantine court costumes.
